Harrington Raceway offers solid Monday card

April 24th, 2018

Harrington Raceway's Monday cards have continued to be among the best in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Delaware half-mile oval offered owners, trainers, drivers and onlookers the chance to see numerous competitive events for older and younger pacers alike. A similar card will be offered for trotters on Wednesday, the track's annual Breast Cancer Awareness program.

In the opening race on the Monday card, Sonny The Shark (Mike Cole) benefited from a pocket trip behind 8-5 favorite Art Of A Warrior (Corey Callahan) through the first three calls then overhauled that one in the lane to score by a length in 1:56.1. A five-year-old Four Starzzz Shark gelding trained by Bart Dalious for The Wiz Kids Stable, Sonny The Shark recorded his first victory in 10 starts this year and now owns a 3-7-8 slate and $47,000 banked from 66 career tries and took a new lifetime mark while ending a drought in the process.

One race later in a non-winners of five races or $24,501 lifetime class for younger pacers, several of which will be targeting the next round of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund elims and subsequent final on Governor's Day here in late July, Transitioning Joy (Montrell Teague) lived up to his role as the 1-5 favorite when he overcame post seven to gain command past the quarter in 28.2, rolled by the halfway station in 57.2, kept his outer flow pursuers at bay by three-quarters in 1:26, then held safe the late bid of 12-1 shot B's Yankee (Allan Davis) to score by a length in 1:54.4.

A sophomore son of Barber Pole owned and trained by George Teague, Jr. of Rainbow Blue and Wiggle It Jiggleit fame, Transitioning Joy now sports a 2-3-1 slate and $45,000 banked from eight starts this year and a 5-5-3 slate and $105,000 bankroll from 16 career tries. He finished second once and third once in two DSBF elims then was second to Slick Tony in the $100,000 final on March 29 at Dover Downs, but Transitioning Joy will be seeking redemption against that one this summer in the DSBF final at Harrington on Governor's Day.

Then two races later in a non-winners of $13,001 last five starts class for older pacers, Options Are Adream (Ross Wolfenden) led throughout to forge a mild 5-2 upset in an eye-opening 1:51.3. A five-year-old If I Can Dream gelding trained and driven by Wolfenden for owner David Banks of Rookery fame, Options Are Adream notched his third win from six starts this year and pushed his seasonal earnings toward $17,000. He owns a 14-4-2 slate and $92,000 banked from 32 career tries, having earlier taken a mark of 1:51 flat at Rosecroft Raceway.

Then one race later in the featured $17,000 Open Handicap for older pacers, former Levy series combatant Soto (Art Stafford, Jr.) got away third then benefited from a lively tempo and was able to overcome a first over bid to score in 1:52.4 as the 7-2 second choice, finishing a length clear of 3-5 favorite Major Uptrend (Tony Morgan). A six-year-old Rocknroll Hanover stallion trained by Eric Ell for owners Kenny Wood, Bill Dittmar and Steve Iaquinta, all of J L Cruze fame, Soto notched his second Open tally of the meet and now owns a 3-2-2 slate and $54,000 bankroll this year and 26-16-15 slate and nearly $520,000 bankroll from 106 career outings.

Major Uptrend, hero of the previous Open Hcp at Harrington on April 16 as the 3-10 choice, got parked to the quarter in 27.2 to gain command, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 55.4 and by three-quarters in 1:24.2 but was unable to rebuff the first over bid of Soto while clearly second best. The Tim Crissman trainee owns a solid 5-3-3 slate and $92,000 banked from 13 starts this year and a 43-23-12 slate and almost $540,000 banked from 127 career tries.

One race later in a non-winners of $3501 last five starts class that honored the Eveland Stables for their 50-plus years of racing at Harrington, See You Tuesday (Corey Callahan) overcame a long, parked out bid to gain command and still drew clear in the lane to a three-length score as the 8-5 choice in 1:54.3. A five-year-old Western Terror gelding trained by Art Papadopoulos for owners David Banks and Walter Layfield, See You Tuesday recorded his first win in 12 starts this year and his 11th in 60 career outings and moved to within $700 of reaching the $100,000 plateau in career earnings.

Then one race later in a non-winners of $60,001 or eight races lifetime class for pacers of varying ages, Casino Bags Carlo (Victor Kirby) gained command soon after the start, carved out fractions of 27.3, 57 and 1:25.2 en route to a three-length score in 1:53.2 as the 9-2 third choice. A five-year-old Roddy's Bags Again gelding trained by Vince Copeland, Casino Bags Carlo notched his second win from 12 starts this year and now owns an 8-11-12 slate and nearly $140,000 banked from 48 lifetime outings. He kept pocket-sitting Rat Tail at bay and rebuffed a first over bid from 2-5 choice Bodega Bay (Morgan).

Then one race later in a non-winners of $8,601 last five starts class, Ponderingjacksfame (Wolfenden) lived up to his role as the 2-1 favorite when he overcame post five to gain command in a 27.1 opener, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 56.1 and three-quarters in 1:24.3 and held safe the pocket-sitting Allwillworkout (Callahan) to score by a neck in 1:53.2. A four-year-old Ponder gelding trained by Les Givens for owner-breeders Jim Magno and Joe Fonte, Ponderingjacksfame recorded his fourth win in 14 starts this year and posted his 10th triumph in 44 career tries while pushing lifetime bankroll toward $110,000.

Then one race later in a non-winners of $40,001 or seven races lifetime class for pacers, Takeittotheface (Eddie Davis, Jr.) just lived up to his role as the 3-5 choice when he gained command in a 273 opener, got a breather by the half in 58 flat and then held safe Ain't It Fun (Stafford) to score by a neck in 1:55. A four-year-old Artzina gelding owned, trained and bred by Shawn Hanley, Takeittotheface recorded his third straight win over the Delaware half-mile oval, now owns five victories in 14 starts this year and a 7-6-4 slate and $60,000 banked from 30 lifetime tries.

Wednesday's card at Harrington will honor the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition Pink Night At The Races and the main emphasis will be on the trotters, with the feature being the $16,000 Open Handicap near the midway point of the card. Defending Open champ Common Parlance (Sean Bier) gets assigned post seven, just outside of last week's runner-up, Murmur Hanover (Teague) and Meadowlands invader Royal Becca J (Jack Parker, Jr.). Former DSBF star I Like My Boss (Allan Davis) will leave from post three for trainer Robert Shahan.
