Hidden Scroll first to hit Bad Luck Board

He had set a very fast pace over a sloppy track and convincingly won his debut by 14 lengths in late January, but few would have predicted Hidden Scroll losing last Saturday's Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park in the manner that he did. His relative lack of seasoning and experience inspired some bettors to stand against Hidden Scroll at odds of 6-5 in the Fountain of Youth, but having earned a 102 BRIS Speed rating for his maiden win, many were willing to give him the benefit of any doubts. While it was no surprise Hidden Scroll was up near the lead in the Fountain of Youth even after breaking a few steps slow, the fact he was allowed to set a hot pace of :22.80 and :45.69 while seemingly trying to stay ahead of an overmatched 132-1 outsider, Gladiator King, left many shaking their heads. Hidden Scroll was a spent force by the time the field entered the stretch, and the colt did well to finish only three lengths behind the winning Code of Honor after his early exertions. However, it was a pace scenario his supporters did not expect to occur.
