October 14th, 2020

Tim Holland offers his picks for North American racing at Keeneland, Monmouth Park, and Indiana Grand.

Keeneland

Race 5

Maidens on turf include #2 Palamos (8-1), a debuting daughter of Blame who is a full sister to Mrs. Sippy, winner of the Glen Falls (G2). 3-year-old has been working forwardly and trainer Motion wins with 10% of his first-time starters and with 14% of his runners on grass. Filly is likely ready for a good first outing with Leparoux riding.

Race 6

#8 Here Comes Josie (15-1) is a debuting daughter of Flatter and a half-sister to Maximus Mischief, who won the Remsen (G2). Trainer Walsh wins with a slightly-low 8% of his first-time starters, but saddled a winning newcomer recently at this meet. Chestnut posted a solid 4-furlong work in :48 1/5 from the gate four days ago, and $120K weanling purchase is worth a look at decent odds with Lanerie in the irons.

Monmouth Park

Race 8

Trainer Trombetta wins with 17% of his runners that have not raced for 46-90 days and saddles #10 Newstome (15-1), who was last seen when unplaced in the Tom Ridge S. on the all-weather surface at Presque Isle in August. Son of Goldencents has won two of five starts on regular dirt, including a stakes at this distance at Laurel last year, and has been working well for Trombetta, who has won with 24% of his runners at this meet. Gray can be stalking the early pace under Gallardo, who has won with two of his last eight rides for the barn.

Indiana Grand

Race 9

Maidens sprinting on grass include #3 Chakra (12-1), who comes off a fifth-place finish in an even effort in her debut over the course and distance last month. Daughter of Munnings is a half-sister to three winners on grass and trainer Pitts wins with 11% of her second-time starters. Filly may show more here with Franklin retaining the mount.
