Holland's North American free racing picks for Sept. 10

Tim Holland offers his expert picks for this day in racing at Kentucky Downs, Gulfstream Park, and Indiana Grand.

Kentucky Downs

Race 4

#9 Joy of Treasure (10-1) has raced just twice since winning on this course last year, most recently when closing to finish fifth after being trapped behind rivals for much of the stretch at Ellis 12 days ago. Daughter of Kitten’s Joy has won two of 11 career starts on grass and trainer Kenneally wins with 18% of his runners on turf. 5-year-old should find a solid pace to help her closing style with Jose Ortiz taking the mount.

Race 7

Lasix is added to #12 Star Command (15-1), who has not been seen since finishing sixth in a tough maiden at Belmont in October. Trainer McGaughey wins with 16% of his runners that have not raced for 90+ days and daughter of Orb is out of a half-sister to Dancing Forever, winner of the Manhattan (G1). Filly has been working well and can show more here under Leparoux, who has won with two of his last three rides for the barn.

Race 8

A competitive field for the Dueling Grounds Oaks includes #6 How Ironic (20-1), who impressed when rallying from off the pace at Ellis in her latest last month. Chestnut finished a close fourth in the Florida Oaks (G3) at Tampa earlier this year and posted a sharp 4-furlong work in :46 4/5 at Keeneland recently for trainer Oliver, who wins with 14% of her runners that won last time out. Daughter of promising young turf sire Tonalist can be along late with Bejarano remaining aboard.

Race 9

Wayne Catalano wins with 25% of his runners that won last time out and saddles #4 Big Dreaming (15-1), who rallied from off the pace to win his latest over one mile at Arlington early last month. Son of Declaration of War is out of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Dreaming of Anna, who is from the family of Kitten’s Joy and who has produced three winners on turf. Bay gets a class test but should be forwardly placed throughout with Landeros riding.

Race 10

Blinkers are added to #7 Habitus (6-1), who flattened out to finish third after making progress from off the pace over 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga in his latest last month. Trainer Motion wins with 20% of his runners with blinkers for the first time and son of Kitten’s Joy is out of a mare by speedy sire Indian Charlie. Dark bay can be running late with Velazquez up.

Gulfstream Park

Race 1

#4 Fitz’s Mo (15-1) makes his first start for trainer Richards off a fading sixth-place finish in a maiden special weight event after vying for the early lead from the rail in his debut in May. Richards looks for first winner of the year but bay posted a sharp 3-furlong work from the gate in :35 3/5 five days ago and has a speedy pedigree being by Outwork and out of a mare by D’wildcat. Colt figures to be sent early with Vasquez in the irons.

Indiana Grand

Race 9

Brad Cox wins with 19% of his first-time starters and saddles #5 Mission Canyon (7-2), a debuting son of Uncle Mo who is a half-brother to Daddy Long Legs, who won the U.A.E. Derby (G2). $230K yearling purchase has been working well and Cox has won with 28% of his runners at this meet. Bay is likely ready for a good first outing under De La Cruz, who has won with 33% of his rides for the barn in the past two months.
