Holland's North American free racing picks for Sept. 13

Tim Holland looks at Gulfstream Park and Monmouth Park and adds a bonus pick for Prairie Meadows Sunday.

Gulfstream Park

Race 1

Trainer Hamm wins with 21% of his runners debuting in maiden claiming events and saddles #10 Thechromeweknow (10-1), a first-time starter by California Chrome who is out of a mare by Speightstown, whose offspring win 16% of their first outings. Gelding posted a sharp 3-furlong work in :36 2/5 from the gate eight days ago and can win at first asking under Prado, who won with one of his last four rides for the barn.

Race 4

Maiden claimers include #2 J Z My Man (5-2), who makes her first start for trainer Loza after giving way badly at Churchill when facing better in late-June. Loza won with three of his last 10 runners first time for his barn and son of American Pharoah is a half-brother to three winners. Gelding figures to be in front early and tough to catch with Zayas in the irons.

Monmouth Park

Race 6

#11 Contained (9-2) came up empty when unplaced in her debut over 6-furlongs at Belmont in July. Trainer Duarte has won with seven of his last 21 second time starters and daughter of freshman sire Flintshire is out of a half-sister to In Lingerie, who won the Spinster (G1). Bay should show improvement at this longer distance with Batista riding.

Race 10

Chad Brown wins with 27% of his runners that have not raced for 46-90 days and saddles #7 Assiduously (7-2), who weakened to finish third after taking the lead early over 9 furlongs in his latest at Belmont last month. 3-year-old has won one of four career starts and Brown has won with 37% of his runners at this meet. Bay can be in good position from the start under Gallardo, who has won with three of his last six rides for Brown.

Prairie Meadows

Race 8

Maidens going 6 furlongs include #6 Pirate Rick (4-1), a debuting son of 10% first-out sire Liam’s Map, who is out of a mare by Scat Daddy whose offspring win 16% of their first outings. Gray cost $350K as a yearling and has been working well for trainer Kelly Von Hemel, who wins with 23% of his first-time starters. Gray appears ready for a good first outing under Roman, who has won with 23% of his rides for the barn in the past 60 days.
