Thoroughbred racing is back in full swing, with more than a dozen tracks offering live racing fare today, and Tim has picks for Tampa Bay Downs, Delaware Park, Parx, Canterbury Park, and Penn National.
Editor's Note: With a slate of 680 picks Tim sits at 132 winners (19%) for a slight loss (-5%) overall but a solid profit of 11% with picks at odds of 5-1 or higher. A few weeks of 2nds and 3rds at decent odds right now to result in that slight loss shift.
Tampa Bay Downs
Race 2
#3 Aunt Dorothy (7-2) makes her first start for trainer Gulick and has not been seen since fading to an unplaced finish in her first turf start last August as the favorite. That was only her second outing, and the daughter of excellent turf sire Uncle Mo is a half-sister to a turf winner. She's been working well for Gulick, who wins with 17% of his runners that have not raced for 90+ days, and the dark bay can be forwardly placed throughout with Allen in the irons.
Delaware Park
Race 7
Trainer Delacour wins with 27% of his runners that have not raced for 90+ days and saddles #12 Too Cool to Dance (8-1), who has not been seen since fading to an unplaced finish at Belmont 13 months ago. A half-sister to Grade 3 winner Nomorerichblondes, the daughter of Kitten’s Joy makes her first outing for Delacour, who has won with 15% of his runners since the beginning of the year. Mare has an 8-1-4-1 turf record and can be in good position from the start with Centeno taking the mount.
Parx
Race 8
Maidens going 6-furlongs include #8 Arkaan (7-2), a debuting son of 16% first out sire Into Mischief. He's out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, whose offspring win 13% of their first outings, and the $450K yearling purchase shows a 3-furlong work in :36 2/5 five days ago for trainer Pino, who wins with 15% of his first-time starters. Gray appears ready to win at first asking under Sanchez, who has won with one of his last two rides for the barn.
Canterbury Park
Race 3
#3 Hurts So Good (9-2) finished third in one previous start over the track and distance, and cuts back in trip after fading to an unplaced effort over a mile at Oaklawn in February. Son of Mineshaft posted a sharp 5-furlong work in :59 3/5 six days ago for trainer Robertson, who wins with 10% of his runners that have not raced for 90+ days, and bay can be running from off the pace with Canchari aboard.
Penn National
Race 9
Newcomer #7 Mave Runner (10-1) has a good win early pedigree being by young sire Golden Lad (22% debut win) and out of a mare by 14% first-out sire Peace Rules. Dark bay worked 4-furlongs in a good :47 2/5 this month for trainer Kravets, who wins with 13% of his runners in maiden claiming events. Filly appears ready for a good first outing with Diaz in the saddle.
