Welcome to one off newly arrived autumn’s Update edition of the TwinSpires Harness Blog, a review of our suggested contenders and all of the in-the-money finishers from our horses-to-watch list (H2W) from last week. As well check our News & Notes section, reporting and remarking on the states of our sport.

Friday, Oct. 16

Our betting weekend of features started at Philly with the Simpson Stakes for frosh-filly pacers and trotters.

We won in each two-race set. For the filly pacers, the public went along with us and Darby Hanover ($5.00, $2.60, $2.40), while we were third with Let’er Buck ($2.10) in the other filly fight.

In the filly trotters couple, we won with Love Muffin ($4.00, $3.00, $2.10) in the first split and we were second in the second with Iglare AM ($4.00, $3.40) to finish an $11.00 exacta.

We settled concentrating on four of the Indiana Sires Stakes Super Finals, taking home one of the best of the evening’s six-digit events, the sophomore trot. Our choice won when Priceless ($17.00, $8.40, $5.60) too home the Hoosier division championship.

Otherwise, in the remain three, we finished third with Virgo ($2.80) in the frosh-colt pace, won by a 6-1 shot; sixth in the frosh-colt trot with Illini Carl (11-1), won by the public’s second choice; and 10th in the soph-colt pace with Island Of The Sea (33-1) in the soph-filly trot, won by a 9-1 shot.

As predicted, we—and everyone from here to earth’s core—backed the pacing sire’s trotter, Captain Corey ($2.20, n/p, n/s) as he won the W.R. Reynolds event at the Meadowlands. Captain Corey, a two-year-old colt trot by Googoo Gaagaa, remains unbeaten.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Northfield’s Courageous Lady was won by the second favorite as our choice, Blazin Grace (62-1) disappointed with a vague and useless journey around four turns with no excuse to stay entirely out of the action from start to finish. In other words, she was anything but courageous though she came into the race with promise to at least try.

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Exactas listed include a H2W horse finishing second to a race-favorite or if the first two finishers are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses are listed—a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices are correct (even when a show price exceeds a place price or all prices are the same).

Please note that some results reflect horses racing after the blog posts (they appear the following week).

This week, there were 35 active horses (a 11-percent win hit rate and a 60-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

Real Cool Sam, two-year-old male trotter of 2019, was a major disappointment at three, opening his soph campaign as the winter-book favorite for the Hambletonian poorly. Trainer Jim Campbell said, “We had to stop with him, he had an injury in his right hind. Everything’s looking good [for a] come back next year, and the Hambletonian Maturity will be one of the things on our list.”
