How to bet Gulfstream's mandatory-payout $274,672 Rainbow Pick 6 carryover

March 6th, 2022

A busy weekend of racing at Gulfstream Park wraps up on Sunday with a $274,672 Rainbow Pick 6 carryover scheduled for mandatory dispersal.

The final pool for the 20-cent wager (which kicks off at 3:08 p.m. ET) is projected to exceed $2 million. Let’s take a race-by-race look at the sequence, then assemble a ticket on a $64 budget:

Race 7: $50,000 Maiden Optional Claiming (one mile on turf)

#2 Gooch Go Bragh (2-1) ran second over this track, distance, and class level on Jan. 8 and hit the board in the With Anticipation S. (G3) at Saratoga last summer. He looks formidable in his first start for hot trainer Danny Gargan, who wins at a 34% rate with new claiming acquisitions.

#9 Fiery Heart (3-1), adding blinkers and returning to turf after a subpar outing on Tapeta, is another logical contender.

Race 8: $6,250 Claiming (one mile)

#6 Papa Honor (7-5) has been posting sharp Brisnet Speed ratings against tougher company, most recently winning for a $12,500 tag at Gulfstream. But the son of Honor Code has been competing on Tapeta, and his dirt form is less inspiring.

We’ll back up Papa Honor with the speedy #5 Tone Feelin (3-1), a gate-to-wire winner sprinting seven furlongs over this track and class level last month. He was claimed out of that race by Victor Barboza, who strikes at a 40% rate with horses running back for the first time following a claim.

Race 9: $20,000 Claiming (1 1/16 miles on turf)

It feels like almost anything could happen in this competitive claimer. We’ll start by emphasizing the class-dropping trio of #6 Benelux (9-2), #9 Heza Kitten (8-1), and #10 Vegas Kitten (15-1), then throw in graded stakes winner #5 Vettori Kin (4-1) for good measure.

Race 10: $25,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (6 1/2 furlongs)

#7 Alecka Star (2-1) is unbeaten and unchallenged in two starts at Gulfstream, wiring her debut by 14 1/2 lengths over a pair of next-out winners before leading all the way to nab a $12,500 allowance optional claimer for Florida-breds by 5 1/4 lengths.

Alecka Star looks tough to catch, but don’t sleep on the chances of #4 Fabricate (3-1), who trounced a $35,000 claimer on Jan. 20 at Gulfstream by seven lengths. Fabricate is making her first start for Jose D’Angelo, who strikes at a 30% rate with new claiming acquisitions.

Race 11: $35,000 Starter Optional Claiming (1 1/16 miles on turf)

#6 Kitodan (5-2) romped in a Tapeta test over this class level on Feb. 6, rallying to win by 5 1/4 lengths. The son of Point of Entry is bred to handle turf and was only beaten five lengths in Gulfstream’s Pulpit S. three starts back, his lone grass run to date. Throw in jockey Javier Castellano (a 22% winner teaming up with trainer Mike Maker over the last two months), and Kitodan looks formidable.

The only other runner we’ll include is #9 Born a Gambler (3-1). True, he was soundly beaten by Kitodan when finishing second on Feb. 6. But Born a Gambler is eligible to improve in his first turf start under hot jockey Jose Ortiz—after all, dam Deanaallen’skitten won multiple stakes on turf, including one at Gulfstream.

Race 12: $25,000 Maiden Claiming (1 1/16 miles on turf)

#6 Eagle Chief (3-1), runner-up racing one mile over this course and class level last month, is an obvious threat while squaring off against similar company. But #11 El Pecado (6-1) and #13 Sir Terre (10-1) finished just one length behind in a dead-heat for third, and #3 Righteous Bay (6-1) and #9 Warn (4-1) also have the form lines to factor.

  • 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6: 2,9 with 5,6 with 5,6,9,10 with 4,7 with 6,9 with 3,6,9,11,13 ($64)

Good luck!
