How to bet the 2021 Fleur de Lis Stakes

June 25th, 2021

Two of the top distaffers in training headline the $300,000 Fleur de Lis S. (G2) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. And the race is likely to come down to the impressive pair.

Fleur de Lis Contenders

#1 POINT OF HONOR (6-1) -- Grade 2 victress kicks off her five-year-old campaign from the rail in her first start since joining the McGaughey shedrow. Talented late runner is winless dating back to May of 2019, but she has run with the best in her division and notched five Grade-1 placings along the way. Chestnut mare will be making one run from well back under Castellano.

#2 ANTOINETTE (20-1) -- 2020 Saratoga Oaks queen has displayed high-end quality on both the turf and dirt for Mott, but the filly lands in an ambitious spot on Saturday. Speedy Godolphin homebred could sprint to the lead in the early going, but she will need to run the race of her life to be a major factor inside the final furlong. Florent Geroux riding is a plus, though.

#3 VAULT (10-1) -- Recent Ruffian S. (G2) heroine has run three good ones in succession and has never been better for Cox. Jump Start mare faces a tall task on Saturday in her second local assignment, and she will need a heated and contested pace to run at down the stretch. I think others are more likely.

#4 ENVOUTANTE (2-1) -- Classy McPeek pupil loves Churchill Downs and brings fine form to the race as a logical win contender. The four-year-old Uncle Mo filly was a smart runner-up in the La Troienne S. (G1) two back, prior to posting a facile stakes triumph on the strip in advance of Saturday. Versatile Kentucky-bred will always be forwardly placed beneath Hernandez.

#5 SPICE IS NICE (8-1) -- Pletcher trainee has shown glimpses of becoming a major player in the division on a few occasions, and she may be ready to make that leap in the Fleur de Lis. The $1.05 million daughter of Curlin is 2-for-2 in 2021 with a Grade 3 tally to her credit, and she has exotics appeal making her third run off the shelf. Johnnie V retains the ride.

#6 LETRUSKA (4-5) -- Mexican standout is on a roll with fine victories in the Apple Blossom S. (G1) and Ogden Phipps S. (G1) in her last pair of assignments. Bay Super Saver mare is a head shy from being unbeaten from four graded races this season, and she got a perfect draw on the outside of the field for this affair. Fleet homebred can win while rating on the lead, or from slightly off the pace, as well. Jose Ortiz will guide the deserving favorite.
