How to bet the 2021 Street Sense Stakes

October 29th, 2021

A promising field of nine juveniles will go postward in the $200,000 Street Sense S. at Churchill Downs on Sunday. The co-feature of a deep "Stars of Tomorrow I" card appears to have attracted some fine colts and geldings that could be impactful horses next season on the Triple Crown Trail.

Topping that list is the Dale Romans-trained #6 Howling Time. The $200,000 son of Not This Time has just one start under his belt at this stage of his development, but that one outing was very impressive. Tracking from off the pace while wide in a six-furlong maiden, the Kentucky-bred showed fine acceleration late to win in impressive fashion beneath the Twin Spires.

Howling Time earned a solid 91 Brisnet Speed figure, and has since come back to work on a trio of occasions in advance of his initial stakes attempt. Joe Talamo retains the mount aboard my top selection.

Mike Maker’s #5 Kiss the Sky hasn’t done much wrong from three career appearances, showing a win and a pair of seconds to his credit. The $290,000 son of Twirling Candy exits a strong runner-up showing in the grassy Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile, and he showed that he can run on dirt, too, when runner-up at first asking at Ellis Park. Talented bay will have Corey Lanerie in the controls.

I have not given up on Steve Asmussen’s #1 Guntown as of yet, despite his even sixth-place finish in the Iroquois S. (G3) most recently. The Winchell homebred caught the eye when breaking his maiden in sharp fashion at Ellis two starts prior, and a move forward from the rail post makes him a viable contender in this tilt with Santana taking the reins.

Two contenders that I will include for the lower rungs of the exotics are Brian Lynch’s #4 Red Danger, who annexed the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs two back, and #7 Lucky Boss, who was runner-up in the Ellis Park Juvenile earlier this season.
