#2 MAXIM RATE wins the $75,000 CRR and TOC Stakes at Del Mar (BENOIT PHOTO)
Seven fillies and mares will go one-mile on the Santa Anita lawn in Sunday’s $200,000 Goldikova (G2). The two-turn test looks like it could come down to a trio of contenders inside the final furlong and I will structure my wagers around them.
Goldikova Analysis
#2 Maxim Rate has been in fine form in 2020 for trainer Simon Callaghan, and I will side with the Exchange Rate filly. Gray 4-year-old ran a strong second in the recent Rodeo Drive (G1) on the course in her latest showing, which marked her fourth consecutive top-two result. The Kentucky-bred cuts back to a mile on Sunday, and she has earned three of her four lifetime wins going 8 panels. Her consistent late kick will be stronger at this trip with Rispoli in the stirrups.
#3 Raymundos Secret held on gamely to notch her first graded victory in the Mabee (G2) last time out for d’Amato. Bay daughter of Treasure Beach has excellent early foot, and like the filly to her inside, the cut back in distance will only aid the fleet 4-year-old. The lass drilled a bullet 5 furlongs in her most recent morning move, and she will be tough to upend if she establishes a clear edge in the early going on Sunday.
Doug O’Neill’s #7 Tonahutu has been going well since being claimed four prior, with her top result coming when a nose second in the Yellow Ribbon (G2) three back. The 6-year-old Sir Prancealot mare is a three-time winner at the distance, and her positional speed gives her a tactical edge on her late-running rivals in the Goldikova. Abel Cedillo will guide the top-three player.
