How to Bet the Matriarch Stakes

A superb field of fillies and mares will run one mile on the Del Mar turf in Sunday’s $300,000 Matriarch S. (G1). Eight of the 11 entered for the feature are graded stakes winners, in what is one of the division’s better grass races of the season.

Matriarch Stakes Analysis

There is plenty of pace signed on for the Matriarch, and the tempo should be healthy throughout. The improving Giza Goddess has elevated her game since being sent from the start in recent races, and she will use that same tactic today. But she will have company every step of the way.

Storm the Hill, Toinette, Got Stormy, Painting Corners and Juliet Foxtrot will be in close attendance from the break.

Matriarch Stakes contenders and morning line odds

#1 STORM THE HILL (20-1) -- Top-three contender gets a good rail draw and could make the frame with her best performance. Get Stormy mare will track the pace while saving ground under Bejarano.

#2 LAKERBALL (30-1) -- Outsider is winless in her last four assignments with lesser and would be a surprise to make an impact in this affair. Three-year-old Lakerville filly looks to be in deep with Roman taking the reins.

#3 SIGNIFICANT FORM (9-2) -- Chad Brown invader is back in her best form with a trio of victories from four races this season. Accomplished Creative Cause filly is versatile and will retain the services of John Velazquez.

#4 MUCHO UNUSUAL (15-1) -- Stout late runner is a Grade 2 victress on this lawn and is likely to improve in her second run off the short absence. Talented California-bred filly has top-three appeal with slight improvement for Yakteen.

#5 TOINETTE (7-2) -- One of two from the Drysdale barn enters in strong form in hopes of securing her initial Grade 1 victory. Daughter of Scat Daddy is three-for-four in 2019 and was tons the best in the Goldikova S. (G2) in preparation of today. Four-year-old will track the pace under Flavien Prat.

#6 SIMPLY BREATHLESS (15-1) -- Grade 3 vixen is winless in her last four and will need a career-best to challenge this fine field late. Drysdale charge will be doing her best work in the stretch beneath Drayden Van Dyke.

#7 GOT STORMY (5-2) -- Classy filly has won or placed in each of her 2019 assignments, including a fine second-place result in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) most recently. Mark Casse pupil is consistently excellent and the race goes through her. Favorite sticks with regular rider Gaffalione for her Del Mar debut.

#8 PAINTING CORNERS (30-1) -- Speedy sort from the Miller barn will stretch out after sprinting on the lawn this campaign. Three-time local heroine will be involved from the start under Paco Lopez.

#9 DADDY IS A LEGEND (8-1) -- Scat Daddy filly was a close second in this race in 2018 and has been sharp in both prior tries on the course. Weaver trainee had an easy prep win in advance of today, and she will try to run them down from off the pace under Manny Franco.

#10 GIZA GODDESS (20-1) -- Stakes-winning Cairo Prince filly has come a long way in a short amount of time for Shirreffs. Gray sophomore comes off a good second in the Autumn Miss S. (G3), and she could be the one to catch today.

#11 JULIET FOXTROT (3-1) -- Grade 3 heroine has been great since coming to the U. S., finishing first or second in all five starts. Cox trainee was an excellent runner-up in the First Lady S. (G1) at Keeneland last out, and she was also a nose second in a lone prior try at Del Mar. Florent Geroux comes out for the ride.
