A field of seven 2-year-olds will go postward in Sunday’s $98,000 Street Sense S. at Churchill Downs.
Street Sense Analysis
The pace of the Street Sense figures to be on the moderate side with no confirmed front runner in the group. #5 Eucharist was quick from the gate in his debut offering going 6 panels at Keeneland and will be the one to catch under Gaffalione. The WinStar homebred shows some swift morning drills this campaign, and he could have the tactical edge on the major players in the cast. He is my top selection.
#7 Super Stock is the class of the field and will never be too far back under Santana. The Asmussen pupil is a stakes winner who has been third in both the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and Iroquois (G3) against top competition in his last two performances. The Dialed In colt has been somewhat forwardly placed in each of his assignments since moving to the dirt in his second career outing, and I envision the Kentucky-bred employing an up-close stalking trip on Sunday.
A trio of contenders rallied from off the pace in their respective maiden tallies. #2 Oncoming Train, #3 Arabian Prince, and #4 King Fury, each delivered a closing victory in the Bluegrass State, the latter pair doing so while going a route of ground. I simply don’t think the pace will be swift enough to aid the style of them, however, and I will limit their usage to the gimmicks at this stage of their development.
#1 Crime Spree was very game to win at 5 1/2 panels at Louisiana Downs on debut, though I will need to see him do it against this kind before getting in his corner. #6 Franz Josef has steadily improved from three lifetime performances and did ace his route debut at Presque Isle Downs most recently, but he would be a surprise, nonetheless.
