How to bet the Suburban

July 2nd, 2020

Eight will go postward in the $200,000 Suburban Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park on Saturday.

Suburban Analysis

#2 Parsimony, #4 Mr. Buff, and #5 Joevia will all flash speed in the early stages of the Suburban. The pace will be honest at the very least.

Suburban Contenders

#1 TACITUS -- Gray colt from the Mott barn draws the rail following an even fourth-place result in the Oaklawn H. (G2). Juddmonte homebred is twice Grade-1 placed at Belmont Park and is a must-use in all wagers with John Velazquez back in the saddle.

#2 PARSIMONY -- Dominus colt was defeated by 29 lengths in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita in his return from Dubai for O’Neill. Gray colt has speed and ability, but he would be a surprise going 10 furlongs in the Suburban with Kendrick Carmouche picking up the mount.

#3 FOREWARNED -- Outsider from the St. Lewis barn closed mildly to be third in the Westchester (G3) in preparation for this contest. Flat Out 5-year-old will appreciate the move to 1 1/4 miles, but he needs better to make the frame against this field.

#4 MR. BUFF -- Top pick has run a trio of very good races to commence 2020 for trainer John Kimmel. Four-time local victor had a fine prep when second on the oval going a one-turn mile last time out, and I think that he will thrive in his initial try at 1 1/4 miles. Regular pilot Junior Alvarado has the call atop the Empire State-bred.

#5 JOEVIA -- 2019 Belmont (G1) third has been in poor current form, being defeated by a combined 42 lengths in his last three performances. Shanghai Bobby 4-year-old was a distant fourth in the Westchester most recently, and he will need major improvement to be in the mix inside the final furlong on Saturday. Jose Ortiz rides.

#6 SIR WINSTON -- Casse trainee earned his biggest score to date when eclipsing the 2019 Belmont on the surface. Talented chestnut had a solid prep for the Suburban when runner-up in the Flat Out S., and he will challenge for the win with a top effort on Saturday. Joel Rosario will guide the Awesome Again colt.

#7 JUST WHISTLE -- Matz trainee has shown nice improvement since adding blinkers two back, topped by a score in the Sunday Silence S. at Gulfstream Park most recently. Pioneerof the Nile 5-year-old will appreciate the added ground, and a top-three finish is very possible with Irad Ortiz in the controls.

#8 MORETTI -- Late developer from the Pletcher shedrow has captured two races in succession, including a victory in the Flat Out on the oval last out. Well-bred colt has never been better in winning or placing in four straight overall, and he will have clear sailing from the outside post as well. Javier Castellano has the assignment.
