The finale on a huge Saturday of racing at Kentucky Downs attracted 16 dashers for the uber-competitive $700,000 Turf Sprint (G3).
Turf Sprint Contenders
#1 RENAISANCE FROLIC (50-1) -- Longshot from the dangerous Joseph barn gets a tricky rail draw in a very tough spot. Paynter gelding has early foot, but he will need a lifetime best to challenge this cast late under Graham.
#2 STUBBINS (6-1) -- Talented 4-year-old was a smart runner-up in his lone try over the course for Doug O’Neill. Jaipur (G1) fourth could peak in his third start of 2020 with Rosario in the controls.
#3 FRONT RUN THE FED (5-1) -- Chad Brown pupil will make his local debut coming off a strong allowance victory on the Belmont lawn last time out. Fed Biz colt has won four of six leading up to his graded bow and is an obvious contender with Castellano up.
#4 TOTALLY BOSS (9-2) -- Son of Street Boss just missed in a fine second-place showing in the Shakertown (G2) at Keeneland most recently. Defending champ proved to have an affinity for the surface last season, and he will be on all of my tickets on Saturday.
#5 BOMBARD (20-1) -- West Coast invader from the Mandella barn tired in the lane going longer last time and wisely cuts back in trip on this occasion. War Front gelding is a stakes winner sprinting on the green and presents great value with turf ace Prat riding.
#6 KANTHAKA (5-1) -- I was very impressed with the chestnut's runner-up showing in the Jaipur off the year absence for Motion. Jimmy Creed gelding has trained well in the interim and could be the one with even slight improvement in this spot. Jose Ortiz rides.
#7 AMERICAN ANTHEM (12-1) -- Maker pupil has never run on the green and landed in an especially tough spot for his grassy bow. Bodemeister 6-year-old is hard to back beneath Gaffalione.
#8 BON RAISON (30-1) -- Sisterson claim is winless on the turf and brings poor form to the race as an outsider.
#9 IMPRIMIS (8-1) -- Grade 2 victor was an even fourth in the race in 2019 and has to be given a chance in his second try since November. Orseno-trained son of Broken Vow has a versatile running style, and the 6-year-old still has room for improvement being lightly raced. Irad will guide the win threat.
#10 RICHIESINTHEHOUSE (15-1) -- Consistently very good son of Sidney’s Candy missed by a neck in a Grade 2 turf sprint at Woodbine last campaign for Rivelli. Speedy bay has a nose for the wire with a 14-for-21 lifetime mark, and he is yet another win player in a deep and accomplished field.
#11 ARCHIDUST (12-1) -- Upset contender is perfect from two tries since joining the Asmussen barn and ran well in his lone local appearance at Kentucky Downs. Chestnut son of Verrazano possesses a fine running style to get first run on the closers, and I like his chances for a top-three finish with Santana in the stirrups.
#12 BOUND FOR NOWHERE (5-1) -- Fleet Grade 2 hero is classy and a stakes winner on the course for Ward. Group-1 placed son of The Factor draws outside but has fine gate presence, and he looms large in his third start of 2020 with Garcia up.
#13 TIGER BLOOD (20-1) -- First on the also-eligible list sports a strong 9-for-14 career mark on turf and finished a solid second in the Preview Turf Sprint S. in his most recent endeavor. Cowtown Cat gelding could hit the board with a lifetime best.
#14 FAST BOAT (15-1) -- Sharp charge is mostly consistent and was a victor in his lone prior assignment at Kentucky Downs. City Zip gelding was an excellent fourth in the Shakertown last out, and he could contend if he draws into the field with Beschizza in the silks.
#15 HOLLIS (30-1) -- Longshot has won two of his last three, but he would be a surprise against this cast.
#16 ADMIRAL LYNCH (15-1) -- Maker pupil has no turf experience and would be widest of all if he gets in. I will let the Super Saver colt beat me.
