How to bet the turf stakes at Gulfstream Park January 4

January 3rd, 2020

Five stakes will take place during a fine day of racing at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Two of the featured events are for 3-year-olds on the turf, and those races will be my focus.

Kitten’s Joy (G3)

Seven colts, one gelding and a filly will vie in the 7 ½-furlong grassy event. Conditioner Todd Pletcher has a lively duo entered for the race, and I will give top billing to his #9 Summer to Remember.

A bay son of Summer Front, Summer to Remember was a sharp runner-up on debut behind subsequent Grade 1 victor Decorated Invader at Saratoga. He returned to post a convincing maiden win on the Gulfstream lawn off the bench most recently, and the $200,000 weanling purchase fired a bullet half-mile in preparation of the Kitten’s Joy.

Summer to Remember should have clear sailing throughout from the outside post under Luis Saez.

Underneath for the exotics, I will use Pletcher’s #6 Mystic Lancelot, recent Churchill Downs maiden graduate #4 Bless the Kitten and Pulpit second #2 Irish Mias.

Kitten's Joy Wagers

  • $10 Win and Place:  #9 Summer to Remember ($20)
  • $2 Trifecta Key: 9 with 2,4,6 ($12)

Ginger Brew

Natalma (G1) heroine #4 Abscond headlines a dozen sophomore fillies in the 7 ½-furlong turf affair. Trained by Eddie Kenneally, the Blame lass makes her seasonal debut following a seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). She is the class of the field, but the Kentucky-bred faces a tall task against some interesting prospects today.

#12 She’s My Type roared home an impressive debut vixen on the course and adds Lasix for her stakes bow. The Christophe Clement trainee gets a demanding post on the outside, but I think that the bargain $27,000 purchase could be a good one. Tyler Gaffalione stays in the silks.

#5 Our Little Jewel is one of two Michael Trombetta trainees in the cast, and the Hat Trick filly appears to be coming into her own. Florida-bred was second in the Sophomore Turf at Gulfstream Park West most recently and seems poised for a good showing at a nice price.

Chad Brown’s #3 Moral Reasoning has displayed a fine turn of foot while sprinting on the green to this stage of her development. More Than Ready filly might thrive with more ground to work with from off the pace beneath Javier Castellano.

Ginger Brew Wagers

  • $2 Exacta Box: 3,4,5,12 = $24
  • $1 Trifecta Box: 3,4,5,12 = $24

Good Luck!
