Woodbine Mile Analysis
The early tempo will be lively with #2 Armistice Day, #3 Shirl’s Speight, #6 Admiralty Pier, and #8 War of Will all being prominent from the start.
Woodbine Mile Contenders
#1 MARCH TO THE ARCH -- Arch gelding was superb in his King Edward (G2) romp on the course last time out for Casse. 5-year-old is perfect from a pair of local tries, and he thrives with the long stretch to work with at Woodbine. Patrick Husbands inherits the mount atop the win contender.
#2 ARMISTICE DAY -- Stakes winner from the Minshall shedrow removes the blinkers for his third run off the layoff and has been training in swift fashion as of late. Gelded 4-year-old possesses obvious talent, but he faces a tall task in this field under David Moran.
#3 SHIRL’S SPEIGHT -- Twice-raced colt was a debut winner on the green, followed by a decisive victory in the Marine (G3) on the synthetic last time out. Highly regarded Speightstown colt faces a huge class rise on Saturday, but he could be special enough to be in the hunt late for expert horseman Roger Attfield. Kaz Kimura will ride.
#4 STARSHIP JUBILEE -- Classy lass is a Grade 1 heroine on the surface and sports a strong 8-5-2-0 mark at the distance, as well. Indy Wind 7-year-old has good early presence combined with a fine late kick, and she could beat this cast on her best day with Stein in the stirrups.
#5 OLYMPIC RUNNER -- Second of three from the Casse shedrow makes his first Grade 1 attempt while coming in off a pair of sprints on the All-Weather of late. Gio Ponti gelding is in good form, but would still be a surprise on Saturday with Fukimoto in the controls.
#6 ADMIRALTY PIER -- King Edward runner-up is swift early, and the Grade 3 victor has been first or second in four of his last five outings for Minshall. Chestnut 5-year-old will face pace pressure on Saturday, however, and he will be hard pressed to be a major factor inside the final furlong without a perfect voyage. Steven Bahen will take the reins.
#7 VALUE PROPOSITION -- Dansili 4-year-old was an even third in the deep Poker (G3) in his latest venture for Chad Brown. Dark bay has been training in swift fashion in preparation of the Woodbine Mile, and he moves forward if there is some moisture in the ground on Saturday. Luis Contreras will guide the top-three threat.
#8 WAR OF WILL -- Classic winner put his versatility on display when coming out on top of the Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) at Keeneland last time out. Casse pupil has run two big ones previously on this course and gets a great draw on the outside of the field. Pacey War Front colt will track with intent from the start under pick-up pilot Hernandez.
