All-time great racemare Winx makes her grand finale in Friday night’s Queen Elizabeth (G1) at Randwick. Post time is 1:05 a.m. (EDT), and TwinSpires.com is marking the occasion with a “Winx farewell bonus.”

Winx was literally kicking up her heels at her home base of Rosehill Thursday, striking a sponsor’s sign hard. The battered sign took the worst of it. Winx was unscathed, not only sailing through a vet check to pass fit to race, but also coming through her Friday morning gallop in fine fettle. Trainer Chris Waller said that the dust-up only showed that his stable star is “ready to explode.”
That’s bad news for her eight rivals in the about 1 1/4-mile feature that Winx has won the past two years. She promises to complete the three-peat for her 33rd straight win, and the reported title of world’s richest-ever racehorse.
Of the rest, the one I’m interested in watching is He’s Eminent. Mainly that’s because he (then known as Eminent) was my hope for the 2017 Derby (G1) at Epsom, where he checked in a close fourth. Third-placer Cracksman went on to reach great heights, and fifth Benbatl, subsequently a multiple Group 1 hero himself, played second fiddle to Winx in her fourth Cox Plate (G1) October 27.
Although Eminent was largely disappointing in Europe thereafter, except his front-running coup in the 2017 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (G2), the Frankel blueblood has shown signs of a renaissance since joining Sir Mark Todd. Now called He’s Eminent, he made an auspicious Australian debut in the March 23 Ranvet (G1), controlling the pace until run down by Godolphin’s in-form Avilius.
If he can come on for that massive effort on a heavy course off the layoff, he’ll appreciate the relatively better “soft” going here. Todd has said he doesn’t have to lead if others go faster, just needs to go his own cruising speed and not be restrained early. Jockey James McDonald clicked with him last time, so he figures to judge his pace right again.
The Queen Elizabeth is carded as Race 7B on day two of The Championships, with other top-level action in the Australian Oaks (Race 6B), Sydney Cup (Race 8B), and the Coolmore Legacy/Queen of the Turf (Race 9B).
