How to play the Fountain of Youth Day Late Pick 5
Marathon cards at Gulfstream Park have become commonplace and Saturday's 14-race bonanza ends with the Fountain of Youth (G2), as does the 50-cent Late Pick 5. Here's how I'll be playing the sequence.
Race 10 -- Canadian Turf (G3) -- #1 GALLEON MAST (6-1) has never finished worse than third in 13 starts over this course. While unproven in graded company, he's faced enough decent ones in listed and state-bred stakes to merit respect here. Possesses a pretty solid late kick. #4 HIGHLAND SKY (3-1) narrowly missed winning the Belmont Derby (G1) in 2016, but was largely a disappointment last season never climbing out of the allowance ranks. Could prove a different horse now as he was gelded this winter. Tropical Turf (G3) winner #7 SHAKHIMAT (4-1), below par in the Fort Lauderdale (G2) last out, will be forwardly placed and could get the jump on the stalkers and closers.
Race 11 -- Maiden Special Weight -- #1 PERSONAL TIME (9-5), a full brother to Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb, is the most likely winner following a much-improved run last time when adding Lasix. Late-developer could be a nice one for the second half of the year, but tendency to fall far off the pace could prove detrimental. We'll use #9 TRAVELING MIDAS (4-1), who has more tactical foot; #11 HOLBURG (15-1), a half to multiple Grade 1 winner Emollient; and the Pletcher-trained #2 COUNTRY SQUIRE (5-1), who gets Velazquez for the first time, as backup.
Race 12 -- Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3) -- #6 FAVORABLE OUTCOME (3-1) won the Swale (G2) here a year ago and was third best in the Malibu (G1) when last seen in December. #7 NOHOLDINGBACK BEAR (10-1) has plenty of back class himself, and 2017 campaign just didn't get on track after excusable losses in his final two starts of the season. #4 CLASSIC ROCK (6-1) has been working lights out and is four-for-five on this strip.
Race 13 -- Mac Diarmida (G2) -- #1 SADLER'S JOY (7-2) is the class of the field, while the returning #8 PATTERSON CROSS (8-1) missed by a head in this race a year ago. Not sleeping on #4 MUQTASER (4-1) either after a solid finish to his 2017 campaign against graded foes. Twice a winner over this trip at the Spa.
Race 14 -- Fountain of Youth (G2) -- Champion #6 GOOD MAGIC (7-5) not in a must-win situation here, but simply don't see anyone else in the field being in his class at the moment. He's our single.
The 50-cent ticket: 1,4,7 with 1,2,9,11 with 4,6,7, with 1,4,8 with 6 = $54.
Good luck!
