How to wager on the Little Brown Jug at the 2016 Delaware County Fair

September 22nd, 2016

This is the last year a three-year-old pacer must win two heats of the Little Brown Jug to win the Little Brown Jug, but many do not expect that provision to come into play for its swan song as first heat first division favorite Betting Line and second division favorite Racing Hill are the overwhelming choices to advance to the second heat and win the dash for the cash.

Both horses are 3-to-5 on the morning line in their respective divisions, but Betting Line is the likely choice in the 2nd heat, and I prefer Racing Hill, who looks to have a pace advantage, and even if you accept that Betting Line is better, I’m not sure he’s twice is good, and I think we’ll get twice the price on Racing Hill in the 2nd heat.

Also in play is I think Betting Line will have to work harder in his division. He’s in post 5 of 6, and while there is pace to close into, he’ll either be waiting for room late or have to be wide around a turn, and that might take some starch out of him either in terms of winning his first heat or racing at his best for the final.

In the first division #3 Lyons Snyder is an interesting longshot. He’s made the lead before, and his 1:49-flat is the best mark here besides the favorite. #1 Dr J Hanover should benefit from the rail. #4 Check Six is the second choice on the morning line and the one I’m most selling at that price. I’ll play the 3 across the board at 10-to-1 or better and play the 1 and 3 to hit the exacta and trifecta with Betting Line.

In the 2nd division I can’t look past the favorite and will just single him in the Pick 4.
