If Smarty Jones winner Gold Street sang karaoke

"I'm only happy when it rains
I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains"
Editor's note: In a new series aimed at being both fun and informative, where pop culture intersects with Kentucky Derby prep races, we will find a new lens to view our favorite athletes through. Writer Nicolle Neulist takes us to horse karaoke with Gold Street this week. Let's see what song he would choose to sing!
If horses could sing karaoke, it would have been no surprise to see Gold Street leave Oaklawn Park, gallop off to the bar, grab the microphone, and serenade the crowd with Garbage's signature anthem—"Only Happy When It Rains."
He showed talent in his first three starts, all over fast tracks. After a tough debut in an off-the-turf sprint at Ellis Park, he rattled off a pair of second-place finishes, behind Complexifier and stablemate Wayne O. In his next three starts, the son of Street Boss has caught a track either sloppy or muddy. He won each of those races by daylight.
As a winner of an early Kentucky Derby prep race, of course he's only happy when it's complicated. At this stage on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the crystal ball is as cloudy as ever. In the case of Gold Street, the top of his crop has not yet tested him and he has yet to face winners over a dry track
To what extent can we appreciate Gold Street's win?
Gold Street was dismissed at 10.4-1 coming into the Smarty Jones, which dashed many hopes for a big opening-day score at Oaklawn. He remains off many Derby lists, and the recent record of the Smarty Jones justifies that hesitance.
Later Arkansas preps have produced more live runners, but winners of this race have not typically gone on to shine in the Kentucky Derby. Its most accomplished winner to date is Will Take Charge, a champion 3-year-old who waited until later in the year to burnish his résumé.
It's not hard to imagine him neighing out these lines about being unappreciated and misunderstood. For the sake of getting to know him better, it will be nice if the Southwest (G3) is dry. Given what we know, Gold Street may be doing a little cloud seeding. We know he's happy when it rains.
