Jockey Watch: Oliver Calderon wins his first race on June 20, 2021
Jockey Oliver Calderon scored a win with his very first career mount June 20 at Churchill Downs. Calderon piloted Ship's Creek for trainer Ben Colebrook and owners Blackwood Stables and Estate of Harvey A. Clarke in Race 6.
A clean break allowed Calderon to settle Ship's Creek third off the lead at 4-1 odds. When she began to lose position entering the far turn, Calderon gave her the cue to get back into contention on the inside.
Then came the eventful part. At the top of the lane, as Ship's Creek was trying to advance along the rail, leader Imperial Moon crossed right into her path. Calderon had to check and steer outside of Imperial Moon.
Helping Ship's Creek regroup, Calderon encouraged her to regain momentum. His mount responded to pass Imperial Moon near the wire and grab the win under good handling.
Calderon showed poise in the saddle. Afterward, the Churchill jockey colony delightfully indulged in the time-old tradition of celebrating a first win with a dousing.
