Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Thursday, Oct. 15
Keeneland, Race 7: Allowance (1 3/16 miles, 4:24 p.m. ET)
#9 Spa City (7-2 on the morning line) showed promise during the winter at Gulfstream Park, where he finished second in a 1-mile maiden race, behind future Travers (G1) runner-up Caracaro, then stretched out to 1 1/8 miles and scored by a length.
A stoutly bred son of Street Sense, out of a Malibu Moon mare, Spa City never fired in the March 7 Tampa Bay Derby (G2), but he has been freshened and should be ready for a rebound in his first start for ultra-hot trainer Brad Cox.
The 103 Brisnet Speed rating he posted in his maiden win easily tops Thursday’s field, and the extended 1 3/16-mile journey should be within reach for the Godolphin homebred.
Assuming his morning-line odds hold up, a win bet on Spa City could prove lucrative.
$30 to win on #9 Spa City
Good luck!
