Kentucky Derby BRIS Speed Rating Report: Fountain of Youth

Overlooked at 18-1, Promises Fulfilled made it look easy defeating a solid field in the March 3 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park and received an excellent 104 BRIS Speed rating. That puts him in the same range as leading Kentucky Derby contenders Audible (105 winning the Holy Bull [G2] in February) and McKinzie (104 winning January’s Sham [G3]).
Promises Fulfilled improved markedly from a trio of starts last year.
From the second crop of 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford, the chestnut colt’s Speed ratings jumped 14 points from his juvenile finale, a weakening third in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs. His previous best, a 92 for an entry-level allowance sprint win at Keeneland, came in his second start.
He's never been headed at any point of call prior to the finish, setting the pace in all four starts. Promises Fulfilled led comfortably throughout the Fountain of Youth and registered a career-best 101 BRIS E2 Pace rating before drawing away to a 2 ¼-length decision.
A 102 Late Pace number, the first triple-digit figure of Promises Fulfilled’s career, adds another level of appreciation to his performance.
Strike Power may not willingly concede front-running duties in upcoming engagements, but the speedy colt was willing to stalk in second and tried hard all the way finishing a clear second. A flashy wire-to-wire winner in his first two efforts sprinting, including the 7-furlong Swale (G3) in early February, the Speightstown colt registered his second century-topping BRIS Speed rating (101) and the high-quality performance alleviates at least some concerns surrounding his threshold for two-turn distances.
Good Magic came up flat, basically holding his positioning the entire way as he never threatened the top two, and received a 98 BRIS Speed rating for the no-excuse third. Chad Brown may not have had his charge cranked up but it was still disappointing to see such a regression from the 105 Speed fig earned for a sparkling Breeders’ Cup Juvenile triumph.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby series determines eligibility and a 35-race schedule is divided between the Prep Season and Championship Series.
