Kentucky Derby BRIS Speed Rating Report – Sunland Derby

Runaway Ghost made it look easy in the March 18 Sunland Derby (G3), rolling to a 2 ¾-length decision at the New Mexico track, but his 96 BRIS Speed rating came back light. The 1 1/8-mile test represented the final 85-point Kentucky Derby qualifier and the Ghostzapper colt likely stamped his ticket with the 50-point prize.
Trained by Todd Fincher, who recorded his first graded win, Runaway Ghost did lose plenty of ground traveling wide the entire way from post 11 and was wrapped up in deep stretch by Tracy Hebert. He earned a 100 Speed rating finishing a non-threatening second in the February 25 Mine That Bird at Sunland and the winner of that event, Reride, will contest Saturday’s U.A.E. Derby (G2) in Meydan.
Dream Baby Dream rallied from well off the pace to be a clear second, six lengths better than third-placer Peace in his graded debut. By Into Mischief, the Steve Asmussen pupil improved upon a belated third in an Oaklawn allowance to stablemate New York Central, who checked in 10th in the Sunland Derby, but Dream Baby Dream registered a career-best 92 BRIS Speed rating that won’t get it done against better rivals.
The Road to the Kentucky Derby series determines eligibility and a 35-race schedule is divided between the Prep Season and Championship Series.
