Kentucky Derby BRIS Speed Rating Report: Wood Memorial

James Scully

April 10th, 2018

Vino Rosso stamped his Kentucky Derby ticket and received a career-best 102 BRIS Speed rating winning the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct, rallying to score by a widening three-length margin. He became the fourth Todd Pletcher trainee to qualify for the Run for the Roses, joining Florida Derby (G1) winner Audible, Rebel (G2) hero Magnum Moon and Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Noble Indy in the 20-horse field.

A chestnut son of Curlin, Vino Rosso rebounded from a non-threatening fourth as the 2-1 second choice in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). He’s registered multiple BRIS Late Pace ratings, including a 106 for a fast-closing third in the Sam F. Davis (G3) in his first stakes attempt, and his 102 BRIS Speed rating would’ve placed him among top contenders in recent years. However, it’s tied for seventh-best in 2018 with a pair of preps remaining this weekend.

Vino Rosso will bring improving form into the Kentucky Derby and is eligible to receive the proper set-up for his turn of foot. John Velazquez, who rode Audible to win the Florida Derby (G1), has opted to stick with Vino Rosso for the Kentucky Derby.

Enticed, who had already garnered enough points by virtue of a convincing win in the March 10 Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct, wound up a clear second but his BRIS Speed numbers dropped five points (104-to-99). Vino Rosso did bump him repeatedly in upper stretch but stewards ruled the contact did not affect the final outcome.

Firenze Fire will be on the Kentucky Derby points bubble, currently 18th with 39 points after a fourth in the Wood, but his 90 BRIS Speed rating in the 1 1/8-mile race won’t get it done.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby series determines eligibility and a 35-race schedule is divided between the Prep Season and Championship Series.
