Kentucky Derby Pedigree Profile: By My Standards

Allied Racing Stable LLC’s By My Standards rallied along the inside through the final furlong en route to posting a 22-1 upset in the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds. The Kentucky-bred colt was three-quarters of a length clear under the wire while completing 1 1/8 miles on the fast main surface in 1:49.53 beneath Gabriel Saez. The Bret Calhoun pupil picked up 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby following his first graded triumph.

The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State by Don Ladd, and he brought the gavel down at $150,000 at the 2018 OBS April Two-Year-Olds In-Training Sale. He was purchased by J. Stevens Bloodstock, agent.

By My Standards is the first graded stakes winner by the sensational Goldencents, whose first foals are three-year-olds this year. The brilliant son of Into Mischief earned in excess of $3 million on the track and closed out his career with a second consecutive score in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) in 2014.

Conditioned primarily by Doug O’Neill, Goldencents was victorious in the 2013 Santa Anita Derby (G1) and is best known for his pair of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile victories. As a sire, Goldencents has yet to distinguish himself from just two crops on the track.

The first dam of By My Standards is two-time stakes heroine A Jealous Woman. The Muqtarib mare raced almost solely on the turf and her best results came at middle distances on the lawn. His second dam is the winning Fly So Free mare, Miss Free Bird, who counts herself a half-sister to stakes winner Devils Disciple.

Muqtarib has not been a very influential broodmare sire at this posting. The son of Gone West has just two daughters who have produced stakes winners to date.

By My Standards is obviously improving and has a measure of class to him. The sophomore toppled a solid cast at Fair Grounds and appeared to have more in the tank as he crossed the wire first in the Louisiana Derby. However, his pedigree leaves a lot to be desired.

He has speed influences in his immediate family and his catalog page doesn’t compare favorably to his main counterparts on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The prospects of By My Standards reaching his peak performance at 10 furlongs are very questionable. I will have to see the colt thrive at a classic distance before backing him in any Triple Crown event.
