Lone Star Park plays for Sunday

June 27th, 2020

A trio of stakes races highlight a fine nine-race card at Lone Star Park on Sunday.

Race 5 -- Lone Star Park Turf

Fillies and mares will travel one-mile in a solid affair. #7 Cowgirls Like Us (7-2) finished a clear third in a local prep for this assignment and she gets the nod to come out on top. Bret Calhoun trainee has run quite well in both of her local races to date, and the versatile daughter of My Golden Song will carve out a nice trip just off the pace under Richard Eramia.

Wager:

  • $20 Win and Place: #7 Cowgirls Like Us ($40)

Race 7 -- Grand Prairie Derby

Sophomores will vie in a 1 1/16 miles main-track contest. I am going to take a shot with #6 Icecap (10-1) at a price for Steve Asmussen. The Carpe Diem gelding has shown improvement in his last trio of outings, and with the plethora of pace in the field, I expect the gray to get a fine setup to run down some tired legs inside the final furlong. Luis Quinonez will be in the controls.

Wager:

  • $2 Trifecta: 6 with 2,3,4 with all ($36)

Race 8 -- Lone Star Mile

Nine will go postward in the dirt tussle that looks very competitive on paper. The pace of the race could be wicked and contested with a handful of fleet contenders signed on, and all signs point to #7 Mocito Rojo (9-2) rallying in the lane en route to victory. Conditioned by Shane Wilson, the chestnut is 17-for-29 lifetime and was a Grade 3 winner in his lone prior run on the surface. I am willing to draw a line through the latest performance by the 6-year-old, who will rebound in a big way on Sunday with Melancon up.

Wager:

  • $1 Superfecta: 7 with 3,6,9 with 3,6,9 with all ($36)
