Assiniboia Downs, near Winnipeg, will be must-see prime time viewing Monday evening as their Jackpot Pick 5 wager will have a mandatory force out. In U.S. currency, the carryover sits at $328,942. Post time for the opener is 8:35 p.m. ET, with the 20-cent Pick 5 (Races 3-7) scheduled to kick off at 9:35.
While the first two legs of the sequence could be dominated by logical types, a couple of potential improvers offer some appeal at longer odds, if not for the Pick 5 than for vertical exotics.
Race 3
#3 YOU'LL LIKE IT (9-2) makes his second appearance over the Assiniboia surface for trainer Shaun Morin. While his 18-1-0-1 record to date is somewhat cringe-inducing, his local debut was one of the better races of his career and that $10,000 N2L claimer was nearly as deep as this allowance. The winner, Striders Ring, has since won three times in allowance/optional claiming company, while runner-up More Than Stature dominated in his next start.
Fourth that day and with improvement possible second time over the track, You'll Like It looks interesting while picking up Rafael Zenteno Jr., second leading rider of the meet and currently clicking at 22%.
Race 4
#1 MILLSLOCAL (30-1) take a much needed and long overdue drop in class to $5,000 maiden claiming. A distant third in his debut for a $15,000 tag last summer, Millslocal spent the remainder of his juvenile season competing in stakes and maiden special weight company, finishing no better than fifth.
The waters got no easier in Millslocal's two starts earlier this meet, both in special weight company. He understandably faded after showing cheap speed in his May 27 comeback following a layoff of nearly nine months, and last time was outclassed even more.
Although blessed with a black type-rich pedigree, Millslocal is unlikely to follow in the hoofsteps of his ancestors. However, an improved effort dropping to the lowest level in his third start off the bench might not be out of reach.
