Meadowlands, Rosecroft, Yonkers offer live action after Preakness
In the moments immediately following the latest renewal of the Preakness Stakes (G1), the Meadowlands, Rosecroft Raceway and Yonkers Raceway all offered solid cards that featured stakes races.
Rosecroft's card began with the first of four $70,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for 3-year-olds of both gaits and genders that comprise the "Sophomore Showdown" portion of the program,
In the opening race on the card, Anna B (Frank Milby) easily lived up to her role as the 1-5 favorite when she gained command soon after the start, rebuffed a bid from Chazberry (Justin Vincent) through the clubhouse turn and edged clear from KJ Dr Michelle (Jared Moyer) in the lane for a two-length score in 1:53 in the MDSS final for 3-year-old filly pacers. A daughter of Cam's Rocket owned, bred and trained by Roger Hans, Anna B recorded her second win in three starts this year and fourth victory in six career tries.
Two races later in the MDSS final for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings, Remarkable De Vie (Tony Morgan) forged a 36-1 shocker when he wore down previously unbeaten 2-5 choice Fire'N Woodshed (Roger Plante Jr.) for a head victory in 1:53.4. A Charlie De Vie gelding trained by Syl King Jr. for owner Steven Mullen, Remarkable De Vie recorded his first victory in five starts this year and handed Fire'N Woodshed his first setback in five career outings.
In the MDSS final for 3-year-old filly trotters, Sleek N Majestic (Eddie Davis Jr.) overcame an extended first over bid to wear down Bossy Hilly (Jonathan Roberts) en route to a four-length score in 1:54.3. A daughter of Charlie De Vie trained by Andrew Stafford for owner Brian Martin, Sleek N Majestic notched her second win in five starts this year, and now owns three victories and just more than $50,000 banked from 12 career tries.
In the MDSS final for 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings, Berzerker (Morgan) easily lived up to his role as the 3-5 choice when he gained command before the half, raced unpressed down the backside and through the far turn, then edged clear in the lane to a three-length score in 1:51.4, erasing the previous stakes mark over the oval. A son of Rusty's For Real owned and trained by Brandon Murray, Berzerker notched his third win in four starts this year and now owns six wins and more than $80,000 banked from 10 career outings.
That same evening at Yonkers, Annie Hill (Brian Sears) rallied from off the pace in a compact field of four sophomore filly pacers to capture the first $20,000 Lismore elimination by a neck over As Time Goes By (Jordan Stratton) in 1:55.4. Two races later Queen Of The Pride (Stratton) quarter moved to command and carved out honest fractions of :56 and 1:24.4 en route to a length tally over Bestseller Hanover (Jason Bartlett) in 1:53.2 in the second Lismore elimination for trainer Kevin Lare and owner Frank Chick.
Also at Yonkers, in the first $40,000 Art Rooney elimination for 3-year-old colt pacers, Air Force Hanover (David Miller) lived up to his billing as the 1-9 choice when he gained command past the :27.4 opener, maintained an honest tempo by the half in :56.2 and by three-quarters in 1:24.2 then held safe Price Hanover in 1:52.4. In the second Art Rooney elimination, Bettor's Wish (Dexter Dunn) forged a mild 3-2 upset when he held safe 3-5 choice Blood Money (Scott Zeron) to score in 1:53.2.
