POWER PLAYS

Mohawk / Races 3—5 
Thursday / June 18

Race 3
Bet-back plays are in motion in a Power Plays (PP) Pick 3 and the usual single-race exotics. At 5-1 last week in a similar conditioner, Cool Rock finished fifth from the second-tier 10 hole, making up ground while forced into a three-wide brush. He was nailed along with other public choices as a 10-1 got the easy trip. In this first leg of the Pick 3, Cool Rock may get more action, owing to the fact a pure favorite is hard to find here.

Race 4
Luc Blaise trainees should begin to cook in week two of the new season. Among them is Sonadora Deo. This soph-filly trot is setting up some worthy gals for the delayed stakes and it’s worth a shot to invest in some expected improvements. Sonadora Deo was 4-1 last week, but will offer much more in this group, making her a bargain.

Race 5
Big trouble for Going Fast last week in our PP knocked him our of contention while burrowing into the stretch with promise at 4-1. The judges rewarded him with a single spot—ninth-placed eighth—at the finish. From post 10 tonight, Going Fast may show early foot to get a good spot for a smoother brush in the stretch and score at a price.

Mohawk / Race 6
Thursday / June 18

More bet-back action could contribute to lucrative single-race exotics. We endorsed Field Gunner last week and must give the Blais-trained another big shot. Almost the public choice at 5-2, Field Gunner made the superfecta with a fiery three-quarters move, his second of the race after falling 13 lengths behind at the half.

Also in that race, Ongoing Royalty is just getting started this season and regardless of racing to his 45-1 odds in the same race as Field Gunner, he needs to prove he can live up to his bloodline, which we feel he could here, blessing any exotic.

POWER PLAYS

Hoosier / Races 4—6
Thursday / June 18

Race 4
A Pick 3 corrals the usual inner-race exotics. In the first leg, Analyze may not get the kind of support she has been used too at Miami, but in the claiming ranks she gets an edge over these.

Demi Ivy has prepped in Florida as late as March and qualified well after arriving in Indiana. She has already picked up checks this year by racing sharply.

Race 5
In January, Rock Flush was among the public’s top choices at Dover but when she moved to Freehold that changed as she lugged along. She qualified at Springfield in Illinois and showed the kind of speed that track offers. Consider this race a drop in class.

Queen N Tens has travel excuses at Hawthorne. Even racing against lesser in Chicago, she is equally matched here, bringing a good resume to Hoosier.

Race 6
We sure do not like the conditions of this local-based soph-filly pacing event division but it’s the third leg of the Pick 3 and offers a big enough field to make the conditions moot.

MJs Riggins Rebel gets a 15-1 morning line (ML)? All right, we’ll take it. The Riggins filly was three for eight at two and starts here at three with no visible reason to be a longshot. Trainer Mike Hollenback puts her into this minor series being serious about her season.

Baby Lets Roll is a speedster and she will show it in her sophomore debut. She may wind up short but will be in the thick of exotic combos with even a decent effort.

Meadowlands / Race 6
Friday / June 19

Those readers following us through the harness hiatus should have read our predictions for top sophomore colt trotters or 2020. Numbers one and five on our best five debut in this race for fillies and colts. Our top choice this season is an outsider—Beyond Kronos. Trainer Jim Campbell is not an outsider and in this horse he may have a colt champion. Beyond Kronos has the 8 hole, one more reason he probably won’t be a public choice here. If we are right about him, he is Hambletonian-bound and if he begins that reign of trotting terror here he will pay some good moolah.

The fifth choice in our top five starts from post 7. Moon Bridge is bound to improve under the tutelage of Ake Svanstedt. He appears ready for this event and will also be a surprise to the mainstream betting public.

Pocono / Races 3—5
Saturday / June 20

Race 3
None other than JK Will Power is back from the hiatus after starting his seven-year-old season with a pair of wins in seven starts. He is still as good as you get in his age group and trainer Andrew Harris knows it. Still, he is not considered the public’s first or second choice, according to the ML. Not so. He’s coming from Gaitway Farms preps, having raced with way better than these. Book it.

Also mis-measured in the ML is Si Semalu. He was doing well for West Canadian transplant Bruce Clarke before the lockdown and fits fine in this group. Certainly he is a fine exotic addition.

Race 4
A Ron Burke trainee, veteran Take It Back Terry is now 11. His ML is 6-1, but we think he will go off higher leaving from post 9. We also think his experience at Yonkers dwarfs that of this field and is a good outside contender for the price he will offer.

In similar shape and well underrated by his ML is Instructor. He starts his season here and trainer Robin Di Benedetto has the five-year-old as fit as he could be to start a season and anywhere near 12-1 is a gift.

Race 5
Again, we disagree with the ML, looking closely at Dynamic Edge. Mark Ford’s trotter has been racing in higher company with stronger foes at Yonkers, coming back after the hiatus with one less turn to negotiate as a major overlay—if the public doesn’t hammer him if they like what we like. At 12-1 or near, it’s worth anyone’s bet.

A slight hike for Crazycat is not enough to toss him out of any exotic combo. Trainer Jose Godnez is not as popular now as he may become during this meet and Crazycat is one reason he will excel.
