Monday harness preview 1/12/15
While many sports enthusiasts will be focused on the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship game between Oregon and Ohio State later that night in Arlington, Texas, standardbred racing fans will be seeking to pad their bankrolls earlier that evening by playing a handful of races at Dover Downs.
As is normally the case, the Monday card at Dover highlights the top pacing fillies and mares on the Delaware circuit and all of the usual array of distaffers will be on hand except for those who normally contest the Filly-Mare Open which was not carded this week. While the Monday card appears contentious from the outset, many of the value plays arrive on the latter half of the 15-race program.
In the 10th, the winners over class for pacing fillies and mares that is one spot below the F-M Open, give Jeremes Sweetheart (Victor Kirby) one last chance for redemption. The durable and talented Eric Ell trainee has finished second in each of her last two starts as the solid choice, settling for the runner-up spot again last week as the overwhelming 1-2 favorite. But Jeremes Sweetheart should be able to get a breather to the half this week in lieu of a 55.3 split at the midway station that eventually proved to be her undoing in the late stages of the mile.
Then one race later in the 11th, the first of three divisions of the winners over $45,000 but non-winners of $100,000 lifetime class for younger pacing fillies and mares, give the nod to Get Real Rusty (Eddie Davis, Jr.) as an overlooked 8-1 shot. Last week in this split condition Get Real Rusty finished second after a second over trip into a swift back half as Quotable Quotes controlled the tempo from the outset. Get Real Rusty should be able to work out another similar trip this evening and perhaps benefit from a quicker tempo.
Then one race later in the 12th, the second of three divisions of the winners over $45,000/non-winners of $100,000 class for youthful pacers looking to work their way into the Open, look for Rachelle's Beat (Ron Pierce) to post an 8-1 upset. Last week she finished third following a first over journey in a gritty effort and this week figures to be a generous price thanks to the presence of both Quotable Quotes and Hit By Lightning, winners of this split condition last week.
Then two races later in a non-winners of four races or $25,000 lifetime class for pacing fillies and mares, give Beavercreek Annie a chance at redemption. Last week she finished a good second following a second over journey while pacing into a solid back half.
