Following three days of betting, Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 closed on Sunday with a pair of widely-hyped 3-year-olds ranking as the co-favorites among individual betting interests.
For the 22nd straight year, the “all other 3-year-olds option” closed as the overall betting favorite at 2-1. Not far behind were Nadal and Tiz the Law, each offering odds of 8-1 in a competitive pool.
The imposing Nadal, conditioned by five-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, might have started at an even shorter price had betting remained open a few hours longer. Not long after the pool closed, Nadal battled to a gutsy victory in the San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita, reiterating his position as an elite contender for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
In contrast, Tiz the Law earned his short-priced status by virtue of an eye-catching triumph in the Feb. 1 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park. Owned by Sackatoga Stable and trained by Barclay Tagg, who teamed up to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby with Funny Cide, Tiz the Law won the Champagne (G1) as a juvenile and closed at 11-1 in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1
Dennis’ Moment, winner of the 2019 Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs but beaten as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), closed as the third individual favorite at 10-1. The breathtaking Maxfield, unraced since romping to victory in Keeneland Breeders’ Futurity (G1) last fall, received plenty of support at 13-1, as did the Baffert-trained stakes winner Authentic (15-1) and Thousand Words (16-1).
Independence Hall (19-1), Honor A. P. (24-1), Anneau d’Or (28-1), Structor (28-1), Enforceable (29-1), Storm the Court (30-1), Gouverneur Morris (32-1), Three Technique (36-1), Basin (39-1), Chance It (39-1), Max Player (49-1), Silver State (50-1), Gold Street (54-1), Palm Springs (98-1), Exaulted (111-1), Violent City (145-1), and Premier Star (169-1) rounded out the offerings.
Bettors wagered $439,694 in the win pool and $151,216.75 in the exacta pool, bringing the total to $590,910.75, a 10.7% jump from the $533,977 wagered in 2019.
