NY Champs At Stake; Mohawk Marauders In Grand Circuit Crunch

TwinSpires Staff

September 9th, 2020

A plethora of stakes lines the harness-racing agenda this coming week. Aside from the Grand Circuit events in Canada, the American map is spotted with sires stakes finals crowning state-bred two- and three-year-old champs. In the interest of space and readers’ time, we will abbreviate some analysis of these top events and sprinkle others in the TwinSpires harness blog’s exclusive horses-to-watch list (H2W), presenting more opportunities for bettors in win, place, show and exotic-wagers.

SINGLE STAKES SET

One $59k leg, the fifth, for Indiana Sires Stakes soph-colt pacers, presents the division’s top state-bred campaigners at Hoosier on Sept. 10. Eight sturdy colts have made it through a quartet of races to get here.

Measuring this field is no easy task. Arguments for all have validity even though there is a standout—Swan In Motion. But he is not perfect, having lost one in six. He was taken down that once only recently by Emma Town Bug, a colt he meets again here. “Emma” is not the next highest money-earner, either; that one is Dude Included, who has hit the board in eight races. Close to Emma’s bankbook, then, is Anchors Away.

Earlier in the season we had our eye on Emma and it is no surprise he became the “Swan”-killer. Byron Hooley has him sharp as can be now and he gets our backing to once again reduce Swan’s motion.

HOOSIER FILLIES

Indiana Sires Stakes’ fifth leg for soph-filly pacers is on target with two $32k splits on Sept. 11. Six go in the first round, a tight, contentious affair. On top for the public is most likely Maggie Rhee. She must work for this, though, because none of the others will be quick to submit.

Somebodysilly, closest in earnings, has won four of six and to her right is Odds On Madison, who has hit the board eight of 10 times. These two may wear out the probable favorite—we tend to go with Somebodysilly for price and purpose.

Six more are entered in round two, where Priceless should be the public choice. She has face better in Grand Circuit competition, so consider this a step down. An upset could be in the works with Genie Rockwell, who has hit the board in all eight starts and has earned near equally in the series as the aforementioned.

EMPIRE STAKES

The New York Sires Stakes finals, each $225k, adorn the Sept. 12 Yonkers program. Here are quick notes on each division.

2yo filly pace
Heart Of Mine gets great inside spot; Think Of Galaxies has hot sire.
3yo filly trot
Love A Good Story from the Millers could beat Hypnotic AM at a better price.
2yo filly trot
With Aela Jamieson, the Millers should continue with a strong night; Destined To Dance is the main threat.
2yo colt trot
In The Cards, the sole entry by top sire RC Royalty, should be the value bet; Ambassador Hanover, obvious favorite, is in the mix anyway.
2yo colt pace
American Courage is spotless; Sexy Blue Chip is the best upset possibility.
3yo filly pace
Hen Party may be a good price for a filly better than the rest; So Rude is sharp now.
3yo colt trot
Hobbs is a notch above these; Chaptiama has yet to race his best.
3yo colt pace
Splash Brother is startling fast and should romp from the inside; Groovy Joe is better than the 8 hole is worst place to start here.

CHAMPLAIN SHOWS

Grand Circuit Champlain Stakes blend into the Sept. 12 WoMo program, featuring a pair for soph filly-and-colt pacers. The fillies go for $86k; the colts for $93k.

In the first filly Champlain, Captaintreacherous-offspring Spellcheck Hanover was impressive getting third in an Eternal Camnation event at 17-1 and here she can improve upon that.

The other filly Champlain sends eight to post and we are behind the only daughter of Captaintreacherous in the field—Adashious Hanover. Second in an Eternal Camnation split at 6-1, she is improving and should be worth her odds.

In the first colt mile, we are backing the freshman from the first crop of Control The Moment—Control Heaven. She is sharp now and seems in store for another win against similar.

The other colt Champlain is a bet-back for us, continuing support for Candy Trader, who finished steps ahead of Control Heaven before that one came back to win.

PEACEFUL WAY

Two frosh filly trotters stand out in the $335k Peaceful Way Final at WoMo on Sept. 12. Dicentra and Donna Soprano have been topping their fields easily, indicating no particular threats will be involved. With that said, an upset is possible should Linda Toscano’s Lady Chaos live up to her name and rile the pair with a sharp trip that leaves her with the stretch momentum. It’s a good shot.

WELLWOOD FINAL

Two-year-old colt trotters look to make an impression lasting into 2021 with a strong showing in the $535k William Wellwood Memorial. However, nine of them have to put up with the outrageous favorite, Macho Martini and the obvious next-best Southwind Tyrion. How to pick an upset here is nearly impossible; somehow the two mentioned would have to act unpredictably. Our only advice is to add On A Streak in exotics as a third wheel and a miraculous winner.

SOMEBEACHSOMEWHERE HERE

Two $77k splits for glamour-boy pacers are also on the Sept. 12 WoMo agenda. In the first we propose a bet-back Mayhem Hanover. Third at 10-1 in a Simcoe last week, he has a good chance to finish atop this sextet.

Then, beating Warrawee Vital is the chore and Moneyman Hill is the one to do it. In the North America Cup he was sharp and alive late, finishing third to Tall Dark Stranger by only 2 ¾ lengths at a stupendous 127-1. You won’t get that kind of price this time but a good return is expected for a six-horse field with a strong favorite.

H2W Legend

Review our choices and confirm the wagers available at the prescribed track. H2W offers possible contenders researched from reviewing races. Horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track with the date of their race and the race number (R6 ) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name, it appears on the list for the second time (horses are listed twice only if, at first, they failed to win. An “ae” signals also-eligible. Types of wagers to make are based on your judgment.
