Oaklawn Park Track Update for Jan. 7

January 7th, 2022

The Oaklawn Park meet, which has previously started around this time of year, has already been rolling for a month. Heading into a week highlighted by Saturday’s Pippin Stakes, let’s see who is making the most impact so far.

Jockeys

Francisco Arrieta at Oaklawn Park (Coady Photography/Oaklawn Park)

Rising young rider Francisco Arrieta has a slim lead in the win standings so far at Oaklawn with 15 victories (15-for-75, 20%), one clear of Florent Geroux (14-for-64, 22%). Though both have slight negative returns so far on the meet, they both are not only tied for the lead in sprint wins with 11, but both have positive ROIs at one turn: +12% for Arrieta, and +16% for Geroux.

In route races, the two leading riders are both bringing it home for the bettors, as well.  Ricardo Santana, Jr. (6-for-19, 32%) has more two-turn wins than anyone, and he has a +24% flat-bet ROI in such races. David Cohen (5-for-27, 19%) has the second-most route wins so far this meet, and his +51% ROI is appealing, too.

Trainers

Brad Cox leads the training standings with ten wins going into this week (10-for-35, 29%, +16% ROI), two clear of Steve Asmussen (8-for-58, 14%, -42% ROI) and Robertino Diodoro (8-for-40, 20%, +11% ROI).

In sprint races, Asmussen (6-for-32, 19%, -23% ROI) and Cox (6-for-19, 32%, +53% ROI) lead the group, though John Ortiz (4-for-16, 25%, +55% ROI), Rene Amescua (3-for-5, 60%, +324% ROI) and Chelsey Moysey (3-for-8, 38%, +204% ROI) have also been strong with limited starts. Going long, Diodoro (6-for-22, 27%, +69%) leads all trainers, though D. Wayne Lukas (3-for-11, 27%, +89% ROI) has been getting home some prices.

With Oaklawn having the most active claim box in the sport, it makes sense to know who is winning off the claim. Chris Hartman (3-for-6, 50%, +40% ROI) and Greg Compton (2-for-5, 40%, +102% ROI) each have more than one win with a new claim. Both Tom Amoss and John Haran have won with the only horse they have started first off the claim.
