Older pacers highlight Harrington Raceway opener
Monday evening marked the opening night of the Harrington Raceway spring meet and the Delaware half-mile oval offered a bevy of older pacers to showcase their abilities. The state's top sophomores will soon have their chance to shine in the quartet of Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund events for trotters and pacers with those finals slated for the lucrative Governor's Day card in late July.
Monday evening Inforce (Victor Kirby) kicked off the portion of the card for older conditioned pacers when he rallied for a 23-1 shocker in a non-winners of $8501 last five starts class. A five-year-old Western Terror stallion trained by Wayne Givens, Inforce notched his second win in nine starts this year and now owns a 10-13-14 slate and $157,500 bankroll from 77 lifetime outings after getting the mile in 1:54.2.
One race later in a tougher non-winners of $13,001 last five starts class for pacers, Quik Shot (Jonathan Roberts) rallied from midpack to forge a 15-1 upset in 1:54.1. A six-year-old Art Major gelding owned and trained by Kathleen Brewer, Quik Shot closed willingly in the lane to record his third win in 11 starts this year and now owns a 21-23-20 slate and $223,000 bankroll from 116 career outings.
Then one race later in the featured $16,000 Open for older pacers, Soto (Art Stafford, Jr.) left alertly from post six and gained command before the opener, carved out the fractions and then just outlasted the late bid of I'm Supersonic A for a nose victory in 1:52.4. A six-year-old Rock N Roll Heaven stallion trained by Eric Ell for owners Kenny Wood, Bill Dittmar and Steve Iaquinta, Soto now owns a 2-2-2 slate and $45,000 banked from 11 starts this year and the former George Morton Levy series combatant sports a 25-16-15 slate and $510,000 bankroll from 105 career outings.
Several races later on the card, Rangers Sureshot (Tony Morgan) lived up to his billing as the 3-10 choice in a non-winners of $3501 last five starts class in 1:56 for his second win in 11 starts this year and his 24th victory from 101 lifetime outings. Casina Bags Carlo (Vince Copeland) closed out the card by taking a non-winners of $2001 last five starts class as the 3-1 second choice in 1:56.3 for his first win in nine starts this year and 23rd victory in 112 career tries.
One night earlier in the Open I Handicap at Pompano Park, Miso Fast (Bryce Fenn) lived up to his billing as the even-money favorite in his four-year-old debut when he overcame his assigned post six to gain command in 26.2, got a breather by the half in 55.3 and held sway through the lane to score in 1:50.3. A former Ron Burke trainee now conditioned by Luanna Beeson, Miso Fast kicked off his current campaign in sharp fashion and now looks poised for a superb four-year-old campaign for his new connections.
