A huge shift in the temperatures across North America and the afterglow of the Super Bowl puts all of our usual raceways into action again. We are ready with selected features, including Power Plays, for maximum profit hunts. Accompanying the special events is the H2W (horses-to-watch) list. Our point-blank approach to H2W horses has been holding at a 40-percent across-the-board return, so check out the list of valuable favorites and double-digit outsiders for any wagers you target. Consult the H2W for all of your harness action. POWER PLAYS Monticello / R5 Thursday, Feb. 7 Last week, the Polar Vortex caused the cancellation of the program at Monticello and with it went our Power Plays (PP) feature. This week, two of the three contenders from that race return. We will add one for triple players. Giddyallyougot was powerful two weeks back, racing overland to finish second at 9-1. This week, in a low-grade claiming event, there should be a clear path from start to finish, even if launching from post 2 only means sucking along. Saving ground should help but all in all, Giddyallyougot could lead the pack from start to finish as well. Also returning is Six Roses. At 6-1 last out she finished seventh, unable to make up ground after giving the leader a 10-length head start. Leaving to the right of “Giddy,” she could get a much better start and be in a good spot early. Together, they should bring back a good exacta. Triple prices are apt to rise if you add the 8 horse, Histoire Eternelle. Even a third spot on the exotic will juice up the win with the aforementioned duo. FEATURES^FEATURES^FEATURES Yonkers / Race 6 Thursday, Feb. 7 One Of The Few had no chance last week, breaking stride at the start and unable to get into the action. He was a strong favorite then but returns this week (the jump was an ordinary trotter’s glitch) for trainer Scott Di Domenico with popular Yonkers driver George Brennan remaining in the bike. All signs are go here, where One Of The Few won’t get wagered as he did last week. In the field there are three trotters getting a morning line of 4-1, including One Of The Few. The favorite is predicted to be Clive Bigsby. A 7-2 favorite anywhere forecasts a competitive field. If that turns out the case, One Of The Few could be a great overlay. FEATURES^FEATURES^FEATURES Meadows / Race 5 Friday, Feb. 8 Doctor RJ failed from the H2W last week. He was a few pennies short of being the public’s first choice (the extra pittance went, of course, to a Dave Palone-driven pacer, which also failed. Doctor RJ made a mid-mile move that cost him late urging, as he swung outside to overtake Palone’s front-pacing steed. Those two shuffling for the front opened up the stretch for the public’s third choice to close strongly and win. In this event, Doctor RJ, leaving from post 2, should save ground behind the obvious favorite on the rail and overtake him late at a fair price. FEATURES^FEATURES^FEATURES Miami / Race 7 Friday, Feb. 8 JD’s Profiteer turned in a performance that marked one of our largest place prices of the young season (74-1, paying $37.60) as he came within a length of beating the huge favorite. There was nothing unusual about the race that gave “JD” an opportunity—he simply raced great with cover on the outside and brushed three wide for his charge. He will get more respect in this event, so do not expect a giant offering for any position in which he finishes. The likely favorite is the obvious Shakerattlenrock, who is on the Adam Short-watch list. The crowd will also back a Ron Burke entry, Endeavors Pride, so an exacta sans the Burke horse will pay nicely. In fact, for longer vertical bets, toss out the Burke horse and use Kayne Kauffman’s Hardts Or Bettor, who may easily use stretch chaos to put a bulge in those exotics, POWER PLAYS Meadowlands / R5 Saturday, Feb. 9 This $12,500 claimer carries a parade of exotics. As well as being the second half of a Daily Double, it also offers an exacta, a trifecta, a superfecta and a Super Jackpot Hi-5. Here is the scoop on five suggested contenders, in post-position order, to configure in whatever exotic tickets you construct. Ohio Larry was claimed two back and stepped up into a claiming handicap with a tag and competition thicker than in this, where he comes down a notch. He raced very well winning against an equal tag and should race better than last week. CC Big Boy Sam is one of three returning from a Power Plays (PP) race last Saturday. He finished second and will have a say in these exotics, possibly winning his first of six starts this season. Mysharona Bluechip did not give a good showing from the outside last week but before that from post 10 he rocked too early. Three back he was more involved, as he should be in this group. Dalton Did It is the second comeback contender from our PP last week. Toss out his 88-1 clinker, his first effort at the Meadowlands, and give him a shot to be in any exotic for price and purpose. He can pick up a piece of any or all of them and would be a shocker for the price should he win. Show Me Up is the third to come back from last week’s PP and the veteran pacer fits well here, even from post 10. With a ground-saving trip and some top speed failing in the stretch, he could pump up the exotic prices but good. H2W Legend Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last) time because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.
