Parx track update: Sept. 21

September 21st, 2021

Saturday, Sept. 25 is the biggest race day of the year at Parx, with a pair of million-dollar races — the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and the Cotillion S. (G1).

And, with Parx in action year-round, this makes it a perfect time to check in on the trends!

Jockeys

Ruben Silvera, second in the riding standings to Mychel Sanchez last year, holds a clear lead this season (156 wins, 639 starts, 24%), well clear of second-place Frankie Pennington (117 wins, 495 starts, 24%). They lead all regular riders in win percentage.

However, Paco Lopez is coming for Pennsylvania Derby Day, and he shines when he shows up in Bensalem. He has 21 wins in just 51 starts at Parx this year (41%), with a +34% ROI.

Though Parx does not run a lot of turf races, a few jockeys really shine on the lawn. Julio Correa (six wins, 22 starts, 27%, +233% ROI) and Silvestre Gonzalez (six wins, 35 starts, 17%, +128% ROI) lead in wins, and have been appealing at the windows, as well. Lopez (five wins, 11 starts, 45%, +70% ROI) has also made great account with limited chances on the Parx lawn.

Trainers

Much like last year, Jamie Ness leads the trainer standings at Parx in a romp (128 wins, 372 starts, 34%), well clear of Louis Linder Jr. (44 wins, 197 starts, 22%) and Scott Lake (36 wins, 241 starts, 15%).

On the grass, Guadalupe Preciado (four wins, 15 starts, 27%, +38% ROI) leads all trainers. Though two are tied for second with three victories, Michael Pino (three wins, nine starts, 33%, +222% ROI) has provided more value at the betting window.

With a lot of claiming going on at Parx, it's worth looking at first-off-the-claim stats.

Though Ness (17 wins, 43 starts, 40%, +3% ROI) and Pino (10 wins, 36 starts, 28%, -9% ROI) lead in wins, bettors are more likely to find a price off the claim from the barns of Howard Brown (five wins, 22 starts, 23%, +24% ROI), J. Guadalupe Guerrero (three wins, 14 starts, 21%, +119% ROI), and Leslye Bouchard (two wins, seven starts, 29%, +287% ROI).
