Quintet Of Colts Aiming For August Line Trio Of Sires Stakes At Monticello

June 2nd, 2019

Only five Hambletonian hopefuls (e) are in action in three New York Sires Stakes (NYSS) for colts on Monday afternoon, June 3. Giving them the edge in the dozen other state-breds is the best way to approach wagering on the events. Around 1 p.m. on June 3, the Monticello program opens with a $37,500 NYSS event, the first of the trio. Looking for a romp, and perhaps getting it done, is Livinonthedash (e). Aside from being the only Hambo-ready colt in the short field, Erv Miller’s colt has the same problem as three others leaving the gate—Winnerup. Trond Smedshammer’s colt has banked more than the others so far this season but its Livinonthedash’s race to lose, especially since he needs more cash to impress his connections when comes time to drop into the Hambo elims box and other events may not be as easy as this one. Exotics may be the only way to attack this, using Livinonthedash as the key but hooking him up with the longer shots available. Those should include Out White Knight, looking for his first 2019 win (but could get his third 2019 place, and JNR Express, who has won two for four but against lesser foes. Another single August prospect headlines the second NYSS split, worth $38,200. That colt is Mr Vicktor (e). Three wins in four starts and a whole batch of dough earned over the heads of the other five in the field, make for Jennifer Lappe’s colt the obvious choice. As a key in exotics, Mr Vicktor is best accompanied by partners including Captain Krupnik (because any Ake Scanstedt-trained horse in the division threatens) and Skyway Kon Man (ditto for Smedshammer). The six in the NYSS’s last race on the day (for $38,200) is half filled with Hambo prospects. The top one is Cavill Hanover (e), from the Svanstedt barn. Without a win in three starts, he has mad more than the other two--Getting Serious (e) and Lights Come On (e). Their resumes are almost equal, though the former also has not won yet. The favorite here, though, will be Travel Winner, on the virtue of his speed mark and record of eight toteboard appearances in nine starts. In this one the crowd will not likely lean into the eligible colts, so this is the time to back Cavill Hanover for the win and get as good a price as a Svanstedt entry can pay under these circumstances.   Hambletonian Trail Top 10 June 3 1.
