Real Good Deal Stakes Headlines Friday Twilight Card at Del Mar
The weekend stakes action gets started at 6:30 PM Local Time on Friday evening at Del Mar with the $150,000 Real Good Deal Stakes for California-Bred or California Sired three-year-olds.
The seven-furlong dash over the main track drew a group of eight led by 3-time winner #2 Take the One O One. The son of Acclamation makes his first start since a length and three-quarter victory in the Snow Chief Stakes on June 2nd. The Jay Em Ess Stable colt has proven to be versatile winning on both turf and dirt and has a victory in his only try over the main track last August.
Take the One O One certainly fits well in this spot, but I am a bit concerned about traffic issues since he drew between other speeds. Jockey Joe Talamo will need to work out a stalking trip from just off the early pace if he wants to give the $47,000 CTN August 2016 purchase his best chance.
#4 Smiling Angelo is the other likely favorite in the 2018 Real Good Deal. The three-year-old ridgling comes in a perfect 2 for 2 for trainer Phil D’Amato. The son of Smiling Tiger has had things his way on the front end in both career starts and now attracts the services of Hall of Famer with regular rider Joe Talamo opting to ride Take the One O One. If Smith can get his mount out of the gate in better order than Talamo did on May 24th he has a big shot to make it three straight wins to start his three-year-old campaign. The seven-furlong distance will present a new challenge though for the Ferro Family Trust runner.
Northern California import #7 Daddysprize heads south with a 3 for 4 record for trainer Tim McCanna. The son of Scat Daddy’s only defeat came in a two-turn affair over the lawn when he bolted on the first turn in the Silky Sullivan Stakes at Golden Gate. He showed he can win on a surface other than the synthetic last time out when he broke from the outside at Pleasanton and won going away in the end. If Tyler Baze can relax him just off the pace from the 7-hole he could take advantage of a contentious battle inside of him.
#3 Psycho Dar and #5 Violent Ridge both have shown the ability to sit off the pace in their career and pass horses in the lane, but they will need to move forward quite a bit to pass this entire group late. However, they could pass the majority of their rivals and provide some value underneath in the exotics.
#1 Fashionably Fast showed determination in his first try off the nine-week layoff on May 26th for trainer Dean Pederson, but the horse he beat to the wire has shown an affinity for finishing second at short prices. The inside draw with plenty of speed drawn to his outside will make things tough on the son of Lucky Pulpit.
#6 Shaymin and #8 Isee It in Hiseyes will need to move forward considerably to factor in the outcome in the Friday feature.
