The Red Mile and Rosecroft offer Sunday stakes action
While many sports enthusiasts were closely monitoring the second weekend of action in the NFL, standardbred fans found ample time to watch the stakes action that unfolded at Lexington's Red Mile and Rosecroft Raceway, which kicked off its three-month fall meet.
In the third race on the Lexington card, the first of eight Kentucky Sire Stakes finals, Forecast (Corey Callahan) benefited from a pocket trip and a belated miscue by favored Don't Let 'Em (Yannick Gingras) made a costly break on the lead at the top of the lane and then outkicked Shake N Bake (Tim Tetrick) in the final 100 yards for a neck victory in 1:53.4 in the $250,000 KYSS final for two-year-old trotting colts. It was his fifth win in nine starts and pushed his career earnings past $185,000.
Then one race later in the $250,000 KYSS final for two-year-old pacing fillies, Beautyonthebeach (Doug McNair) lived up to her role as the 1-5 favorite when she brushed to command early, rebuffed a bid down the backside and through the far turn and edged clear in the lane to a two-length score in 1:51. A juvenile daughter of the late, great Somebeachsomewhere trained by Greg McNair, Beautyonthebeach notched her fifth win from eight lifetime starts and pushed her career earnings past $180,000.
Then one race later in the $250,000 KYSS final for two-year-old filly trotters, Whispering Oaks (Gingras) benefited from a pocket trip through the first three calls, angled out late and just got up to forge a 16-1 upset in 1:54. A juvenile daughter of Father Patrick trained by Jimmy Takter Whispering Oaks notched her third win in nine starts and more than doubled her career earnings to $225,000.
Then one race later in the $250,000 KYSS final for two-year-old pacing colts, Hurrikane Emperor (Daniel Dube) forged a mild 5-2 upset when he gained command down the backside and then outlasted 11-1 Blood Money (Gingras) for a neck score in 1:49.3. A juvenile son of Hurricane Kingcole trained by John McDermott, Hurricane Emperor recorded his sixth win in eight starts and pushed his seasonal earnings past $210,000 while lowering his lifetime mark by more than a full second.
One race later in the $250,000 KYSS final for three-year-old trotting fillies, Nixie Volo (Corey Callahan) posted a mild 7-1 upset when she overcame a parked-the-mile journey and first over bid to edge Pat Latters (Takter) and Live Laugh Love (David Miller) to score in 1:51.2. Nixie Volo notched her fourth win in 12 starts and pushed her seasonal earnings past $215,000 with her gritty score.
Then one race later in the $250,000 KYSS final for three-year-old filly pacers, Dance Blue (Andrew McCarthy) benefited from a second over trip and rallied three-wide on the far turn and prevailed as the 6-5 choice in 1:51.1. That same afternoon at Rosecroft Raceway, the Maryland five-eighths mile oval that kicked off its fall meet on Sunday with a trio of Maryland Sire Stakes elims for two-year-olds of both gaits, the trotters took center stage in to of them.
In the first $6,500 MDSS elim for two-year-old trotting colts, I Deliver (Jonathan Roberts) left to secure good early position, yielded to Remarkable De Vie (Allan Davis) before the half, sat a loose pocket to the half and three-quarters, angled out in midstretch and wore down the leader in the final strides for a nose score in 1:59.3. A juvenile son of Four Starz Robro trained by Greg Haverstick for the Iron Mine Branch, I Deliver notched his first win in six tries and pushed his earnings past $8,000.
Then one race later in the MDSS elim for two-year-old filly pacers, Dancin The Can Cam (John Wagner) also picked the ideal time to garner her diploma when she benefited from a pocket trip behind How Bout Dat Rusty (Roberts) to the half and three-quarters, angled out midway on the far turn and drew clear in the lane to a three-length score over B For Real (Frank Milby) in 1:56. Fashion Smile recorded his ninth win in 18 starts and the seven-year-old Broadway Hall gelding trained by William "Bib" Roberts has been the dominant force among local trotters.
Then one race later in the $10,000 Open II for pacers, Capital Builder (Roberts) overcame an early bobble and led throughout and just outlasted the late bids of Abelard Hanover (Milby) to his inside and Mister Indiana (Wagner) to his outside and prevailed for a nose victory in 1:53.3. A five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Megan Roberts for her father, Bib Roberts, Capital Builder ended a modest drought to notch his ninth win from 47 starts this year.
Then just past the midway card in the featured $12,000 Open I for older pacers, Sams Triple Crown (Wagner) benefited from a second over trip behind favored Kiss A Dragon (Foster) down the backside and through the far turn and swept to command in the lane en route to a two-length score over Al's Hammered (Allan Davis) and Sentencing Memo to score in 1:51.1.
