Rosecroft offers solid Sunday card
While many harness racing enthusiasts are accustomed to seeing the best trotters and pacers compete on Friday and Saturday evenings, Rosecroft Raceway has shifted its best cards to Sunday and the first two weeks of the meet have provided onlookers with good efforts.
In Sunday's opener, Rocktavius (Roger Plante, Jr.) gained command soon after the outset from Hickory Aloha, got a breather by the half in 55.2, kept favored Kiss A Dragon (Russell Foster) at bay down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:23.1, then held the odds-on choice and the pocket horse through the lane to score in 1:51.2. Trained by Megan Roberts, Rocktavius rebounded from a second-place finish in his seasonal debut one week earlier to score in game fashion as the 7-2 second choice.
Then one race in the second race for condition trotters, Deacons Valley (Foster) brushed to command before the opener, shook off a brief challenge past the half and three-quarters and held safe Windsuns Ingenius in the lane to prevail in 1:55. An eight-year-old Valley Victory stallion trained by John Cabot, Deacons Valley carved out the middle fractions and held sway through the lane for a two-length score for his first victory in five tries this year.
Several races later on the card, Whitesville Dixon (David Hill, III) rebounded from an unlucky trip to benefit from a pocket journey to score in 1:57.3. A homebred gelding son of Doggone Yankee owned and trained by Gary White, Whitesville Dixon left to secure the pocket behind Lucky Mass before the opener, sat a tight pocket past the half and three-quarters, angled to the passing lane and just got up late to score by a head. Whitesville Dixon was the champion trotter of the meet last spring.
Two races later in a non-winners of six races or $40,000 lifetime class for younger pacers, Capital Builder (Roger Plante, Jr.) lived up to his role as the 4-5 favorite when he gained command in a 27.4 opener, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 56.3, rolled by three-quarters in 1:24.4 and held sway late in 1:53.3. A four-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Megan Roberts for father, William "Bib" Roberts, who celebrated his birthday on Sunday, Capital Builder posted his second straight victory to start the season and is one of the genuine few free-legged pacers on the circuit.
Three races later in a non-winners of $4500 last five starts class for pacers, Brock N Brian (Timmy Offfutt) left to secure good early position, quarter moved to the front, met a fierce challenge from Dancing Rusty down the backside and through the far turn and held sway through the lane to score in 1:55. A six-year-old The Fraternity Pan gelding trained by Timmy Offutt for owners Gerald & Tammy Lafferty of Huntingtown, Brock N Brian notched his first win in two starts this year and now owns 11 victories and $54,000 banked from 90 lifetime tries.
Then one race later in a non-winners of $6000 last five starts class for pacers, Abelard Hanover (Milby) was parked from post eight to gain command, got pressed by Spinout to the half and three-quarters, shook loose from that one far turn and held safe the pocket-sitting Manattack (Brian Burton) and the late, wide bid of 9-5 favorite Mr Ham Sandwich (Foster) to score by nearly a length in 1:53.2. An 11-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by John Hollingsworth, Abelard Hanover notched his first win in two starts this year and now sports 49 wins and $743,000 from 199 lifetime outings.
Then one race later in another non-winners of $4500 last five starts class for pacers, Beammeupscottie (Jason Thompson) left to secure good early position, yielded to Extreme Machine N briefly then retook, rolled by the half in 54.4, met token pressure from Diamondkeeper (John Wagner) down the backside and through the far turn and through the lane and just lasted for a head victory in 1:53.3. An eight-year-old Rustler Hanover gelding trained by Jamie Vance for owner Gloria Kinnamon, Beammeupscottie notched his first win in two starts this year and now owns 22 wins and $173,000 banked from 153 career tries.
