Rosecroft offers solid Sunday card
While many harness racing enthusiasts are accustomed to seeing the best trotters and pacers compete on Friday and Saturday evenings, Rosecroft Raceway has shifted its best cards to Sunday and the first two weeks of the meet have provided onlookers with good efforts.
In Sunday's opener, Rocktavius (Roger Plante, Jr.) gained command soon after the outset from Hickory Aloha, got a breather by the half in 55.2, kept favored Kiss A Dragon (Russell Foster) at bay down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:23.1, then held the odds-on choice and the pocket horse through the lane to score in 1:51.2. Trained by Megan Roberts, Rocktavius rebounded from a second-place finish in his seasonal debut one week earlier to score in game fashion as the 7-2 second choice.
Then one race in the second race for condition trotters, Deacons Valley (Foster) brushed to command before the opener, shook off a brief challenge past the half and three-quarters and held safe Windsuns Ingenius in the lane to prevail in 1:55. An eight-year-old Valley Victory stallion trained by John Cabot, Deacons Valley carved out the middle fractions and held sway through the lane for a two-length score for his first victory in five tries this year.
Several races later on the card, Whitesville Dixon (David Hill, III) rebounded from an unlucky trip to benefit from a pocket journey to score in 1:57.3. A homebred gelding son of Doggone Yankee owned and trained by Gary White, Whitesville Dixon left to secure the pocket behind Lucky Mass before the opener, sat a tight pocket past the half and three-quarters, angled to the passing lane and just got up late to score by a head. Whitesville Dixon was the champion trotter of the meet last spring.
Two races later in a non-winners of six races or $40,000 lifetime class for younger pacers, Capital Builder (Roger Plante, Jr.) lived up to his role as the 4-5 favorite when he gained command in a 27.4 opener, maintained an honest tempo by the half in 56.3, rolled by three-quarters in 1:24.4 and held sway late in 1:53.3. A four-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Megan Roberts for father, William "Bib" Roberts, who celebrated his birthday on Sunday, Capital Builder posted his second straight victory to start the season and is one of the genuine few free-legged pacers on the circuit.
