November 26th, 2018

One week before the Maryland oval will host the third edition of the $100,000 Potomac Pace for older pacers, Rosecroft Raceway offered a solid Sunday evening program and Pompano Park contributed to the five-eighths mile features with a trio of stakes early and a pair of Open events late.

In the opening race on the Sunday card at Rosecroft, All The Cookies (Tyler Davis) tuned up for a likely berth in the $25,000 Maryland Open by capturing the non-winners of $6,000 last five starts class for pacers in wire-to-wire fashion in 1:51.4. A five-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by Phil Mitchell for owner Jody Lee Cahall, All The Cookies carved out splits of 26.1, 55.3 and 1:24 under confident handling then sprinted clear in the lane to a four-length score. He sports a 7-7-6 slate and $45,000 banked from 37 starts this year and tuned up smartly for next Sunday's "Free State Free-For-All".

Then one race later in a non-winners of three races or $40,000 lifetime class for younger pacers, Pace Car (Jonathan Roberts) benefited from a pocket trip behind B A Rocket (Russell Foster) through the first three calls, angled to the passing lane and surged past the leader and longshot Seen Before Heard (Allan Davis) to prevail in 1:54.3. A four-year-old Foreclosure N gelding trained by Walter Bozman, Jr., Pace Car recorded his first win in 10 starts this year and notched his fourth win from 40 career outings.

Several races later in the second non-winners of $2,500 last five starts class for older pacers, Rock N Row (Jonathan Roberts) easily lived up to his role as the 3-5 favorite when he gained command in a modest 27.4 opener, got a breather by the half in 57.3 and by three-quarters in 1:26.2 then sprinted clear in the lane to a five-length score in 1:54.4. A six-year-old Rock N Roll Heaven gelding trained by Willard Reynolds for owner Donald Fowler, Rock N Row now owns an 8-5-5 slate and $48,000 banked from 37 starts this year.

One race later in the featured $9,000 Maryland Open Trot of the week, Southwind Ferrari (John Wagner) benefited from a lively early tempo and second over journey through the half, advanced first over when his cover jumped before three-quarters, surged to command on the far turn and held safe Third Coast (Roger Plante, Jr.) to score by a length in 1:55.4. A four-year-old Chapter Seven gelding trained by Arlene Cameron for owner Scott Woogen, Southwind Ferrari notched his ninth win from 23 starts this year while forging a 7-1 upset in the top trot.

Then one race later in the third non-winners of $2,500 last five starts class for older pacers, A Major Impulse (Roberts) left to gain command in a 26.2 opener, rebuffed a bid from longshot Major Blue Coat (Declan Donoway) by the half, faced modest pressure down the backside and through the far turn then held safe the late bids of Stakeout and Sword Of The Spirit to score in 1:53.4. It was the third win in 23 starts this year for the eight-year-old Quik Pulse Mindale gelding trained by Luis Collazo.

One race later in the featured $12,000 Maryland I Open Handicap for older pacers, several of which were tuning up for the $25,000 Maryland Invitational next Sunday, Rock N Roll Jet (Kim Vincent) overcame a parked-the-mile journey from post nine to overhaul favored Options Are Adream (Ross Wolfenden) and then outlast Sams Triple Crown (Wagner) to score in 1:51.3. A nine-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding owned and trained by William "Buddy" Bright, Rock N Roll Jet notched his fourth straight win in the Open Hcp and stamped his ticket into the $100,000 Potomac Pace next weekend. Sams Triple Crown will be among the favorites for the $25,000 Maryland Open.

Then one race later in the $6,500 non-winners of $4,000 last five starts class for older pacers, Lil Johnny (Jason Green) rallied from well off the pace and widest of all through the far turn and through the lane and just got up late to score in 1:53.1. A five-year-old Big Bad John gelding owned and trained by Jason Walters, notched his second straight victory and now owns five wins from 21 starts this year and he likely earned an invitation to the Maryland Open next Sunday.

Then one later in the finale, Arts Blaze (Jason Thompson) carved out all the fractions of 27.1, 56.2 and 1:24.4 then edged clear late to score in 1:54.2. A 14-year-old Artsplace gelding owned and trained by John Urbanski, Arts Blaze notched his seventh win from 40 starts this year and he now boasts 54 wins and nearly $385,000 banked from 363 career outings and earned the right to face another 14-year-old star, Foiled Again, next Sunday. Another 14-year-old, Talbot Redneck, won on Wednesday and could join the aged pace invite next weekend.

That same evening at Pompano Park, Gold Star Diablo (Wally Hennessey) easily lived up to her role as the 1-20 favorite in the $54,000 Breeders Stakes final for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings when he brushed to command before the half in 58.2 then sprinted clear in the lane to score in 1:55.1. A sophomore son of Mysticism trained by Michael Deters, Gold Star Diablo recorded his sixth straight victory and pushed his seasonal earnings past $58,000.

Then one race later in the $54,000 Breeders Stakes final for two-year-old pacing colts, Mister Marvalous (Hennessey) just lived up to his billing as the 1-9 favorite when he gained command in a 27.3 opener, got a breather by the half in 57.3, raced unpressed by three-quarters in 1:26.4 then just outlasted the late bid of JB's Boomerang (Bryce Fenn) to score in 1:55.4. A juvenile son of Delmarvalous trained by Kim Sears, Mister Marvalous notched his sixth straight tally and now owns seven wins in 12 starts this year.

One race later in a $55,500 Breeders Stakes final for two-year-old pacing fillies, Natasha (Hennessey) easily lived up to her role as the 1-9 favorite when she gained command before the half in 57.1, met token pressure from Rockin Ellie (David Ingraham) by three-quarters in 1:25.3 then drew clear in the lane to a four-length score in 1:54.1. A juvenile daughter of Six Of Diamonds trained by Kim Sears, Natasha recorded her eighth straight victory and now owns eight wins and $68,000 banked from 10 starts.

Then three races later in the $9,000 Open II class for pacers, Casimir Richie P (Hennessey) rebounded from a fourth-place finish one week earlier as the odds-on choice in the same class when he gained command in 27.2 opener, got a breather by the half in 56.4, opened a clear lead by three-quarters in 1:24.1 then sprinted clear in the lane to a four-length score over pocket-sitting Windsun Gotham in 1:51.2. It was his eighth win in 23 starts and pushed his seasonal earnings past $75,000.

One race later in the featured $10,000 Open I Handicap for older pacers in a compact field of five, Prairie Panther (Rick Plano) got away third, got shuffled back to last on the backside then rallied widest of all on the far turn and through the lane to edge Panocchio and Dakota Jack at the wire in 1:51.2. A four-year-old Royal Millenium gelding trained by Deters, Prairie Panther notched his seventh win from 21 starts this year and now boasts 21 victories in 41 career outings.
