Rosecroft and Pompano offer solid Sunday cards
One day after Gulfstream Park offered a stellar, stakes-filled card highlighting runners with Triple Crown aspirations, the focus on Sunday evening turned to a pair of five-eighths mile harness racing ovals roughly 1,000 miles apart.
Sunday evening, Rosecroft Raceway's 13-race card kicked off with the $10,000 Open Handicap for older pacers and the winner promptly regained his winning ways in gritty fashion. Rock N Roll Jet (Kim Vincent), overlooked at 11-1 from post six, raced first over for much of the last half-mile, overhauled Too Darn Hot (Allan Davis) at the head of the lane and just outlasted the late bid of Kiss A Dragon (Russell Foster) to score by a diminishing head in 1:51.3.
A nine-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by William "Buddy" Bright and co-owned by Bright and Dawn Webb, Rock N Roll Jet notched his first win in three starts this year. Last fall he won twice at the Open level. Kiss A Dragon rallied second over to finish second for the second straight week while seeking his first win of the season. Too Darn Hot settled for third after relenting to the backside pressure.
Then one race later in the non-winners of $6000 last five starts class for older pacers, Jeremes General (Davis) posted a 16-1 upset when he overhauled 6-5 favorite Intheblinkofaneye (Roger Plante, Jr.) in the lane to score in 1:52.3. An eight-year-old Jereme's Jet gelding owned and trained by William Simmons, Sr., Jeremes General rebounded from a dull effort as the 9-5 second choice at the level to notch his first win from three starts this year and now he owns a 27-27-18 slate and $245,000 bankroll from 156 career outings.
Then two races later on the card, Extreme Machine N (Allan Davis) lived up to his role as the 4-5 favorite when he brushed to command before the opener, got a breather by the half in 56.1, raced unpressed down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:24 and held safe 14-1 That's My Harley (Jared Moyer) to score by two lengths in 1:52.4. An eight-year-old Mach Three gelding owned and trained by Jeff Clark of Centreville, Extreme Machine N notched his first win in seven starts this year and now sports a 14-20-12 slate and $152,000 banked from 118 career tries.
Then several races later in a non-winners of $3000 last five starts class for older pacers, Major Blue Coat (Ricky Still) once again overcame post nine to gain command past the opener in 27,.4, shook off pressure from Beckett Hanover before the half in 57.4, raced unpressed down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:26.3 then held sway through the lane for a two-length score. An eight-year-old Art Major gelding trained by Brittany Bounds and co-owned by Brittany and Michael Bounds, Major Blue Coat notched his first win in three starts this year and now owns an 18-18-16 slate and $136,000 banked from 154 career tries.
