Rosecroft Wednesday card offers plenty of promise
While the Sunday cards at Rosecroft Raceway have clearly been more intriguing than those offered on Wednesday evenings at the Maryland five-eighths mile oval, tonight's card offered onlookers a glimpse into several potential local stars.
Wednesday's opener, a non-winners of $1,000 last five starts class for older pacers, Majestos lived up to his role as the 3-5 favorite when he gained command just past the opener in 27.4, got a breather to the half in 58.4, met token pressure down the backside and by three-quarters in 1:27.4 then shook loose from that one and held sway through the lane for a length score in 1:56.2. A six-year-old Three Olives gelding owned and trained by Jay Baxter, Majestos notched his second straight tally and now owns a 3-2-1 slate and $8,000 banked from 22 seasonal starts.
Then three races later on the card, Sophist (Jason Green) just lived up to her billing as the 4-5 choice in a non-winners of one race or $5,000 lifetime class for younger pacers when she brushed to command past the opener in 28.1, met token pressure by the half in 58.1, shook loose from that one before three-quarters in 1:28 then just outlasted the late bids of Zachdaman (Zach Amiss) and Future Delight (Jason Thompson) to record her first victory in six career starts for trainer Steve LeBlanc.
Then two races later in another non-winners of one race or $5,000 lifetime class for younger pacers, B A Rocket (Frank Milby) easily overcame post seven to gain command, rolled by the half in 57.1, met token pressure down the backside then drew clear in the lane to a three-length score in 1:56. A sophomore son of Cam's Rocket owned and trained by Brian Callahan, B A Rocket notched his second win from 12 starts this year and lowered his lifetime mark by more than four full seconds in the process.
Three races later on the card, Easton Ally (Russell Foster) easily lived up to her role as the 6-5 favorite in the non-winners of three races or $40,000 lifetime class when she gained command in a 27 opener, rolled by the half in 56.1, maintained an honest tempo by three-quarters and drew clear in the lane to a five-length score in 1:54.1. A four-year-old Art Major mare owned and trained by Ronald Malone, Easton Ally ended a mild drought to record her fifth win in 18 starts this year and push her seasonal earnings past $31,000.
One race later in a non-winners of $4,000 last five starts class for pacing mares, KG Rocks (Green) benefited from patient handling early, shook loose entering the far turn and rallied three-wide turning for home to prevail by two lengths in 1:54.2. A six-year-old Rock N Roll Heaven mare owned and trained by Heidi Van Vliet, KG Rocks ended a prolonged drought to notch her first win in 10 starts this year and her 13th victory from 67 career tries.
Then one race later in the Wednesday feature, Little Sandyloam (Bret Brittingham) overcame post eight to gain command in a 27.1 opener, got a breather by the half in 57 flat, met serious pressure drom Hillbilly Jet (Milby) down the backside and through the far turn and edged clear from that one late to score by two lengths in 1:53.2. A six-year-old Riggins mare trained by Donald Brittingham, Little Sandyloam notched her fifth win from 23 starts this year and now owns a 17-22-14 slate and $160,000 banked from 111 career outings.
Rosecroft Raceway fans are already counting down the days to the third renewal of the $100,000 Potomac Pace on Sunday, December 2, a night that will also offer a $20,000 Maryland Invitational for state-owned pacers and another event for Foiled Again. In the midst of his farewell tour which continues this Monday at Harrington Raceway in Delaware, Foiled Again will make one of his last handful of starts at Rosecroft on the Potomac undercard in an event restricted to pacers 10-years old and upward.
