Saturday Yonkers, Meadowlands cards highlight aged pacers
This coming Saturday evening, while many sports enthusiasts across America recover from last week's Super Bowl 52 drama, both Yonkers Raceway and The Meadowlands will offer decent overnight cards with a trio of their two dozen events highlighting some classy aged pacers seeking to enhance their reputations.
Saturday's feature race at The Meadowlands is the $20,000 Preferred that offers an interesting blend of pacers. Hug The Wind N is making only his third start in the United States since arriving from 'down under' and already boasts one win against modest competition. The seven-year-old Bettor's Delight stallion owns a solid 11-13-9 slate and $340,000 bankroll from just 49 lifetime tries - numerous older pacers in this country often make that many starts in a year - and the Ross Croghan trainee will look to prove that he belongs at this level.
Bettor's Edge arrives with a pair of second-place finishes from three starts this year and the Ron Burke trainee sports a lofty 36-29-25 slate and $2 million bankroll from 160 lifetime outings. Granted, this Bettor's Delight gelding has seen his better days but he could still prevail at this level at the Big M. Endeavor (Pat Lachance) has already won twice in four starts this year at the Big M, including one at this level, but the jury is still out on this Lachance trainee.
Across the Hudson River at Yonkers Raceway, a pair of non-winners of $20,000 last five starts conditioned events may not rate the feature category, but they are very intriguing.
In the fourth, the durable and venerable Lucan Hanover makes his second start of the season for trainer Andrew Harris following a modest sixth-place finish at the Big M, but he could win and stay at this level next week. A classy sort and longtime combatant at the top levels at numerous venues, Lucan Hanover sports a 30-26-30 slate and $1.1 million banked from 129 career outings and he sports a stellar 1:48 lifetime mark and appears primed to notch his first tally opf the campaign.
Then five races later in another non-winners of $20,000 last five starts class for aged pacers, Foiled Again will make another attempt at attaining the 100th victory of his Hall of Fame career when he leaves from post eight. This 14-year-old Dragon Again gelding and longtime member of the Burke brigade is in the final year of competition and brings a stellar 99-65-44 slate and record $7.57 million bankroll into his 307th start. Overcoming post position eight will prove difficult, but soon after Foiled Again garners his 100th career victory - which should come this month - he should embark on a farewell tour and visit at least a dozen tracks, especially those few where he has yet to go behind the gate.
