With Pool 5 of the 2021 Kentucky Derby Future Wager this week, Brisnet.com editors James Scully and Vance Hanson have put their heads together and reached a consensus on an individual entry they both like. They also scanned the remaining options and have each picked out others they're excited to back in the pool this week.

Consensus Pick: Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 5

Bob Baffert recently lost his leading Derby candidate, Life Is Good, due to injury. While Concert Tour will be preferred in this pool among his remaining entries, it's best not to sleep on #15 MEDINA SPIRIT (20-1). His morning line odds for this are rather inflated considering he ran Life Is Good close in the Sham (G3) and was a clear second to that stablemate in the San Felipe (G2), the form of which could make him the one to beat in next week's Santa Anita Derby (G1). It's also worth noting that his game victory in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) came at the expense of Hot Rod Charlie, who flattered the form by winning last week's TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) against many of the leading Midwest-based Derby prospects. A more seasoned horse than Concert Tour, Medina Spirit could easily be twice the price, if not more, in this pool.

#18 PREVALENCE (20-1) is headed to a major prep race after winning both starts by open lengths, including a dazzling 8 3/4-length maiden romp. The Medaglia d'Oro colt is behind rivals in terms of seasoning, but he may have the talent to catch up in the coming weeks. His odds promise to be shorter on Derby Day if he captures his stakes debut.

Vance Hanson's bonus free pick

Although he lacks seasoning compared to a number of other Derby prospects, #5 CROWDED TRADE (30-1) is a potentially exciting colt for trainer Chad Brown. A winner on debut in late January, the son of More Than Ready narrowly missed in the one-mile Gotham (G3) in his stakes debut, registering an impressive 104 Brisnet Speed rating. Another step forward in his upcoming two-turn debut will be required to enhance and secure his candidacy, but wouldn't put it past him as this barn was successful winning a classic just a few years ago with a colt making his fourth lifetime start.
