Scully, Hanson find common ground in Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

With Pool 2 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager opening Friday, Brisnet.com editors James Scully and Vance Hanson have put their heads together and reached a consensus on an individual entry they both like. They also scanned the remaining options and have each picked out a candidate they're excited about backing in the pool this week.

#6 ENFORCEABLE (30-1) has the pedigree to go as far as his talent will take him, and he certainly has depth of experience with seven starts already under his belt. A half-brother to Breeders' Cup winner New Year's Day (sire of Maximum Security) and a full brother to Mohaymen (who ran fourth in the 2016 Derby), the Tapit colt has shown increasing professionalism, recently displayed with a strong winning rally in the Jan. 18 Lecomte (G3) at Fair Grounds.

Prior losses in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) and Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) might leave some cool to him, but 30-1 or thereabouts might prove a steal weeks from now if he continues to move forward in races like the Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2).

He didn't get going until the stretch and finished second best in the Lecomte, but it was still an encouraging two-turn debut for #17 SILVER STATE (50-1). A big, long-striding colt by Hard Spun, the bay hails from the same female family of 2001 Kentucky Derby Monarchos and has shown talent so far, finishing first or second in all three starts. I think the lightly-raced sophomore has the potential to move forward significantly in the coming months for Steve Asmussen, and that makes him an intriguing value play for KDFW Pool 2.

Vance Hanson's bonus free pick

The Sham (G3) wasn't much more than a glorified allowance race and he displayed plenty of greenness in winning it by a large margin, but #2 AUTHENTIC (15-1) still has time to mature and develop into a more refined product before the first Saturday in May. While not crazy about his pedigree with respect to getting 1 1/4 miles, there's no questioning his innate talent and potential after two starts. He's the kind of colt Bob Baffert can likely get to overachieve, and the possible addition of blinkers for his next start could make him even more effective.
