Scully’s Churchill signature plays for May 31

The second week of the Churchill Downs spring meet concludes with a fantastic 10-race card on Sunday. Here are a couple of horses I will be playing, and one to fade:
Look forward to betting: #1 Freedom’s Flight (7-2 morning line) in the 10TH race. Colt recorded a fine runner-up effort to Ramsey’s Solution when trying the turf at Churchill Downs two starts back in late November, and Freedom’s Flight exits a solid rallying fourth in a March 27 maiden special weight at Gulfstream. Jose Ortiz picks up the mount, and Freedom’s Flight looks poised to graduate for Mural Sancal.
Live longshot: #1 New Day Dawning (10-1) in the 4TH race. Her main rivals are drawn outside in this competitive turf affair, and New Day Dawning will either be showing the way, or sitting just behind the early leaders, from her favorable inside draw. A good second when trying the turf last fall, the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro did not receive the proper trip last time when returning off a three-month freshening at Gulfstream. The gray filly is worth a look at a price for Rodolphe Brisset.
Favorite against: #1 Strong Yen (5-2) in the 2ND race. The opening-day track played favorably towards front-running types and Strong Yen took advantage, leading wire-to-wire at 6-furlongs. The gelding would be extremely formidable given that he’s become a 6-furlong specialist this year, but Strong Yen must stretch out to 7-furlongs here. He was unplaced in his lone effort at 7-furlongs, which came under the Twin Spires, and Strong Yen has not hit the board in his last four starts beyond 6-furlongs at Churchill Downs.
Check out the carryovers going into Sunday's card -- Pick 5 on Races 6-10 ($101,123) and Pick 6 Jackpot ($149,234).
