TwinSpires gives credits for close calls in Valentine’s Day Challenge

The TwinSpires.com Valentine’s Day Challenge offered players who opted in a bonus for hitting a straight 1-4 exacta or double at designated tracks on February 14. When a few results came close, TwinSpires gave those players a Valentine’s surprise – crediting their $5 bets back. According to the contest rules, you had to cash a $5 straight exacta or double with the 1 and 4 horses finishing in that order to qualify for an additional 30 percent bonus on your winnings. Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, and Turfway Park were the designated tracks, and you had to bet at least one contest wager on each track to be eligible for the bonus. Players who bet a 1-4 exacta in Oaklawn’s 2ND race on February 14 suffered a tough beat. The #1 P C Suspect opened up by three in midstretch, and as an 8-1 shot promised a healthy payout. But then the 3-1 favorite, #4 Japedo, rallied to beat him by a half-length. The 4-1 exacta doesn’t qualify since the horses finished in the wrong order for the Valentine’s Day bonus, and boxed wagers didn’t count. Later at Turfway, the 1-4 finished in the right order twice, only in second and third to round out the trifecta, not the exacta that would have hit the bonus. In the 1ST race, #8 Winners Expedition got the jump on #1 Spearette, and #4 Bela Menina was along for third. The 6TH race saw the 8-5 favorite, #7 Vida Leva Eu, prevail over #1 Sour Peach and #4 Yes I’m Evil. Also, the Gulfstream Park rolling double for the 7TH and 8TH races came back 4-1, just the reverse of what was needed for the bonus.
